CENENT NAERS FOREEE B YEAR Plan to Turn Out Enough to Build 8.8 Feet of Road for Each New Car. BY J. C. ROY Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 9.—Between 6.700 and 7.000 miles of concrete | rural highways will be built in the United States this The work of paving city str ill_call fo laying of more t 100,000,000 square yards of pavement, or enough to equal about the same milenge as | the country roads. As a result, ce-| ment manufacturers are prepared to| furnish an extraordinary tonnage | during the yvear. | The building requirements alone | probably will be fully as high as in 1925, the greatest buildinz vear ever | known. Already the volume of con-| struetion since January 1 has approx- | imated $2.000.000.000. Car to 88 Feet of Road. The acute necessity for more paved roads is evident from the (\X’Psf‘n' volume of automobile output. Con-| servative engineers estimnte that 4,200,000 automobiles may be turned out this vear. ) This would mean 2.400.000 cars for every’ mile of new paved highway, or onme car 2.8 feet. The added co actually be only half as sreat as that. however. | for about half the automobiles made | will replac now in use, which will be retir 1. Despite the enormous _demand. cement is selling at the mills at an average for the country as a whole | of less than half a cent a pound. Since it is a low-priced product. its transpor- tation is an important factor in costs to consumers, and it is for this reason that mills are reducing the extent of the territory each attempts to serve. This naturally has stimulated the building of more mills. Moving by Truck. Most of the cement plants of the country, except those in extremely out-of-the-way locations, have f. ties for moving cement by Many of the plants in the Mid West and South have indicated th truck shipments w consideration and have planned pa ing houses to facilitate movement this means. Most of such plants, how- are in or close to large cities, count on the ption of a considerable portion of plant output. | | LIFE’S DARKEST MOMEN NG STAR, WASHINGTON, —By WEBSTER. BALTIMORE, March . 9.—Prelim- inary figures of the Washington, Bal- timore and Annapolis Electric Rail- road for 1925, just made public, show a deficit of $13,533.81 after payment of interest, depreciation. etc. This compares with a balance of $18,529 for the previous vear after deductions. The report shows further that the Annapolis and Chesapeake Bay Power Co., whose operating results are now ircluded in those of the parent com- pany. more than earned its way, while the rallway division lacked $14,000 of earning interest charges, amortization of discount on funded debt and provision for depreciation. The unfavorable showing is attributed to inroads made into revenues by pri- vate automobiles more than to opera- tion of hus lines. - President J. J.
