By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, February 26.—Mme Schumann-Heink, 65-year-old prima donna, has come back to the scenes of her early triuinphs, and there is a stirring of mernories in the dim- mest corners of the old Metropolitan Opera House. Out of the blue shadows of the last scene of Wagner's “Das Rheingold” her rich contralto flowed in the warn- ing song of the Earth Mother for 10 brief minutes yesterday, and things were as they used to be nine years o In front there was a clapping and pushing for the orchestra pit such as a Wagnerian audlence has not shown in many a day. There were 11 curtain calls. Madame at first ap- peared, leading the rest of the cast after her. Then there were three she took alone. Prima Donna Again. Though mother of eight children and a grandmother to boot, she was a prima donna all over again. Bohnen, who had been Wotan to her Erda in the performance, lifted her high so she might kick her heels together. And Marion Talley, who is just beginning, was timid until madame swept her into her arms. “Was 1 good enough,” madame asked them. "I was trembling so that I thought I could not sing. He's in the movies. Did you know?" Her appearance in “Das Rhein- gold” was only in the last dimly lit scene, when she appears as a misty spirit of Mother Eirth to sing to Wotan. Next time, which will be March 10, she will sing as “Erda” again, but then in Wagner's “Sieg- fried.” That was the role in which she made her last operatic appearance nine years ago. LENINGRAD, Russia, February 26 (®).—The government has just pub- lished statistics which show that the average duration of marriages in Len- Ingrad is only four years, there being 237 divorces each year for every 1,000 marriages. This condition is explain- ed by the ease and small expense with which divorces can be obtained under the new Soviet civil code, the only requirement being the expressed de- sire of either party that the marriage contract be annulled. A divorce costs ionly $2. In 1925 there were 13.8 mar- riages for every 1,000 of Leningrad's population. In 1914 the figure was 6.4. ““You have not seen him. D. O, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 1926. RELIGIOUS RITES CLOSE MAHARAJAH CORONATION Sir Harry Singh, Victim of Black- mailers in 1994, Installed Ruler ‘With Hindu Ceremonies. By the Associated Press. > JAMMU, Kashmir, February 26.— ‘The ceremonies for the coronation of the new Maharajsh of Jammu and Kashmir, which lasted a week, ter- minated last night with the religious rites, which proved an impressive sight. The maharajah, who, in ac- cordance with the Hindu religious pre- cepts, was accompanied on the dals by the maharani, vowed to promote the welfare of his subjects. For seven minutes holy water was sprinkled over the head of the new sovereign and blessings were invoked by the saffron-robed priests upon them and the state. The new rulers then were anointed while bands play- ed and nautch girls danced in the courtyards and the halls below. The new maharajah is Sir Harry Singh, who was prominently before the public in 1924, when blackmailers obtained from him $1,600,000 because of his alleged intimacies in Paris with a Mrs. Robinson, an Englishwoman.
