HEFFERNAN. NEW YORK, February 26.—Opera- tions on the selling side gained the advantage in today's curb dealings, and in some .nstances declines were pronounced. Rallies, which took place around the low levels of the day, were due to nothing more than short covering and failed to encourage new buying for long account. The mar- ket again gave the appearance of be- ing a highly professional affair. The big losses occurred in high- priced public utilities where plans for recapitalization have not yet been announced. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK. February 28—The cotton market opened barely steady today at a decline of 4 to 13 points and soon showed net losses of 11 to 19 points under a continuation of | the recent selling movement. Bearish sentiment was encouraged by relatively easy Liverpool cables, reiterated reports that cotton could be purchased on a tenderable basis in some of the Eastern belt spot markets and claims of continued favorable progress with new crop preparations. The break extended to 18.82 for May and 17.74 for October contracts by the end of the first hour, new low ground for the movement, and a de- cline of a little over a cent a pound on old-crop months, compared with the high price touched early in the month. New Orieans Quotations. NEW ORLEANS, February 28. Cotton futures opened steady—March, 18.50; May, 18.28; July, 17.84; October, 17.15; December, 17.12. Liverpool cables were easier than due, and there were evidences of liquldation in old- crop months. First trades showed losses of 8 to 9 points, and prices con- tinued to ease off until March traded at 18.65, May at 18.22, July at 17.78 and October at 17.07, or 11 to 16 points under vesterday’s close. Prices rallled for a brief time on covering by shorts, but the improve- ment did not hold, and prices were soon back at the lows. Cotton Values at Noon. NEW YORK, February 26.—Review- ing the fmproved conditioh in the American pulp and paper Industry due to the growth of consumption, the New York Trust Co. states that since the depression of 1921 the recovery of American paper companies has been rapid, records of 13 representative companies showing earnings of $20. 116,200 in 1923, in contrast to a deflcit of $1,599,400 in 1921. “Figures covering the past quarter century in the American paper indus- try indicate for the most part a steady growth,” the bank says. “Value of products {n 1923 amounted to $907,- 347,000, which is nearly three times the production value in 1914, amount- ing to $882,147,000. The competition from Canada, particulary in news print paper, has been severe, and this country supplies only 60 per cent of the total paper it requires.” The bank pointed out that the pres- ent annual forest growth in the United States probably could be increased 400 per cent under intensive forestry practices. “At present the United States s cutting wood considerably in excess of its anual net growth, recent figurea indicating an average annual cut of 44 cubic feet per acre, compared with an average annual growth of only 8 cubic feet per acre.” RATES ON BAR SILVER.
