In the preceding article the nece: sity of a careful examination of the Torrower's record before making a loan or buving a bond was empha- sized. The record is important mnot only for what it reveals as to willing- ness to mieet engagements but as to capacity. It is on this account that deseriptive of a new a statement as to earnings available for interest charges. The longer the perfod over which such an earning summary goes back the greater the confidence it inspires, Iy when the time overed includes one or more inter- vals of business depression. How to interpret the record and make allowance for the setbacks which come sooner or later to every industry will form the subject of a separate article, but before we come to that consider the case when there 18 no record, which is true of all new enterprizes. Having no history of achievement, the investor has no vard- stick by which to measure. This is one of the reasons why extreme cau- tion is essential with the securities of new corporations. It is not putting it oo strong to sayv that one dependent | on income from his or her investments should make 1t an invariable rule i pever to touch the obligations of a pew company. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, February 24.—Cotton futures opened steady. March, 20.03; May, 19.46; July, 18.83; October, 18.10; December, 17.76. The cotton market was more active and showed a generally steady tone in today's early trading. Some selling at the | opening was promoted by relatively easy cables, but it appeared to be absorbed by covering or price fixing in old crop months, while there was good demand from trade interests for new crop positions on the basis of 17.78 for December. First prices were 7 points lower to 1 point higher, March selling off to 20.00 and October to 18.09, but of- ferings were well enough absorbed at this level to cause rallies of 2 or 3 points, Active positions ruled about 5 points below to 3 points over yes- terday's closing figures at the end of the first hour. No further March notices were reported. Private cables attributed the de- cline in Liverpool to hedging and continental selling. New Orleans Quotations. A favorable weekly weather and crop report added to the easler tone. Toward the end of the first half hour the market was steadler and prices rallied a few points from the low.
