Rev. Dr. Henry Lubeck, canon of he Washington Cathedral, will be the preacher at a service to be held in the Bethlehem Chapel next Wednes. day at 8 p.m. This service has heen arranged by the hoard of religious education of the Episcopal Church jn the diocese of Washington, in con Jjunction with the bishop and chapter | of the cathedral, to commemorate the four hundredth anniversary of the work of William Tyndale. Tyndale was a clergyman of the which was at that time in ecclesiatical relations with the Church of Rome. Rut he was a &cholar rather than a priest or a_preacher and was one of the first Englishmen of hix time to master the Greek language. Somewhat Pur tanical in his views, Tyndale unde: took the translation from the Greek of some of the writings of the early fathers, and approached the Bishop of London for permission to translate the New Testament. Being refused, he joined himself to the household of a wealthy merchant, who encouraged him in his work. But the tendencies of the day were against him, and he was obliged to flee to Germany. After various unsuccessful he finally cation by a printer at large volume containing at Worms of a the gospels sessions | of Matthew and Mark and a smaller | edition of the complete New Testa faent. These books were &muggled into England and sold in large num- hers. After several vears of work in translating, editing and printing parts of the Bible In English, Tyvn- dale was forced to flee to Belginm, where, in 1536, he was arrested and put to death. William Tyndale was not the first to translate Holy Writ into English, but his New Testament was the first English Testament to be translated from the Greek and the first to be reproduced by printing. It is sald that the English of the Tyndale translation was the baais for the beautiful language of the present authorized or King James' version of the Bible universally used ny Prot- estants. Tyndale’s version reached England just 400 years ago. CHURCH OPEN TO PUBLIC. Thanksgiving Day Decorations to Remain Over Sunday.
