14 ELDBROOKE CHURCH TOHAVENEW HOME Congregation Lets Contract for Building at Murdock Mill and River Roads. The Eldbrooke M. E. has awarded a contract to C. H. Briooks for the erection of a new church at River road and Murdock Mill road. It is expected to be com- pleted about next September. The official board appointed a building committee composed of Rev. Charles L. Pate, the pastor, chalrman; C. Wendel Shoemaker, secretary and Luther L. Derrick, John nd H. 8. Omouundro, Sun- superintendent. Howard " Cutler was selected as architect, and he prepared plans for a modern and commodlous church and Supgay &chool building. The main_aud church will be 7 large balcony. congregation torium of the new by 50 feet, with a 3 eating altogether about persons. The choir_loft will accommodate 30 singers. It is hoped to have a vested choir. A pipe organ will be installed. The social hall, under the auditorfum, will be 65 by 50 feet, and will accommodate 300 persons. There will be a stage and dressing rooms for entertain- ments, also a large kitch with modern equipment, for soclal occa- sions and dinners. As a basket ball team is in prospect, there will be lockers, shower baths and wash rooms. The Sunday school building will face Murdock Mill road, connecting with the church building in the rear, and will be 104 by 42 feet, with three floors. The basement will have large rooms for the beginners’ department and the primary department, with aple room for their work and exer- ses. The other departments will be cared for on the two other floors, with ample room for this growing school. The building will be fireproof, being built of steel and tlle construction, and will be on Spanish mi style with red tile roof and stucco exterior. During rebuilding the congregation is worshipping in the old Wisconsin Avenue Baptist Church, and the Sun- day school is meeting in the Daugh- ters of America Hall, on Wisconsin avenue. About §5 years ago a group of Méthodists living in the nelghborhood of Tenleytown, built a small church near the corner of the present site. In this group were a number of early settiers of this community, Philip L. Brooke, John M. Simpson, Mr, Eld, Jacob Earnest, Louis Shoe: maker, Charles Shoemaker, Fred Mr. Harry and many others. 99 the small church had become 100 crowded for the growing Sunday school and was enlarged, and practi- cally rebuilt, to accommodate the growing membership.
