MARYLAND TO USE WOOD DURING COAL SHORTAGE University Extension Service to Aid Farmers to Make Use of Timber Supply. Special Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, November 19.—Mary- land farmers are going into the timber business, if present plans of the ex- tension service of the University of Maryland bear fruit. Surveys are being made throughout the State, and, | before long, wood, especially in the ict, will be taking the place of coal in a number of homes. Trenk, extension forester, one of those in charge of the survey, said: “There is much valuable wood going to waste in Maryland which could be turned into money for the owners. We intend to call attention of the owners of these woodlands to how this wood can be sold. “In addition to helping overcome the coal shortage that seems more acute this year, our surveyors will mark trees for cutting so future growth will not be impaired.” Up and Down. Southern capitalis being invested in many new enterprises along the lines of the Southern Railway System. An even greater gain in production and prosperity in the South in the next ten years than was witnessed in the last ten seems inevitable. But industry can expand no faster than the railroads that bring fuel and raw ma- terials, and carry the finished products to the markets of the country. Money must be invested in railroads as well asfactories, if industry is to be efficiently served. That much of this new railroad capital should come from the South itself seems a natural result of the growing investment wealth of the South.
