When 1,700 miles from the United States, the Italian freighter Ignazio Florio struck a bad storm and was battered into a sinking condition by the great waves. Wireless distress calls brought the S. S. President Harding, and the latter ship rescued the entire crew of the freighter by the use of life boats. Oil was pumped upon the water to settle the woves.
