T et iaes 1o ity R No. 37—Meeting the Tubes. Smith thought that because he had become acquainted with the intimate fusetioning of a vacuum tube he had met the whole family of tubes. The one he had looked into turned out to be typical. To really understand his radio neighbors, however, it became necessary to be introduced to each of them. Smith discovered this when he went | to his favorite radio shop to ask for a new tube to replace the one he had broken. He asked 'the dealer for “a tube,” which did not offer the merchant much assistance. The sales. man asked Smith whether he wanted a WD-12 or a UV-201-A. Smith was puzzled. He was obliged to look at the tube he had burned out before he could tell just what he wanted. “Who named these tubes, any- * Smith demanded when we met in for a radio chat. “Wouldn't we have a fine time of it if we had to ask for a C-301-A when we wanted to buy a tire?” “Well, your method of asking for a straight side 32 by 6.20 four-ply balloon tire would be ju: about a: confusing to @ radio fan who knew little about tires,” I suggested. “Few terms are complicated when one { knows what they mean the name: “It “simplify matters to learn t UV as a prefix before a tube number means that it is one of the series marketed through the Radio Now he has taken up radio, and b amused and profi " by his " evening ith ‘has '@ faculty for *findi ¢t it will mi Y 20T inding, out tAings. w0 it will pay ar each week. cells for the fllament current. Then there are the ones that are bullt for storage batteries. A rather easy way to tell them apart—by their num- bere—is that the dry-cell tubes usual- ly have the lower numbers. It's easy enough to tell them apart when “ou see them, for dry-cell tubes are small. That's why they are called peanut tubes. ‘“‘Another thing to note in studying tubes is that most of those usually used for recelving sets are of the three-element type—that is, the fila- ment, the plate and the grid. Another type of tube, the diode, has only two elements—a filament and a' plate. Its chief ts are its quiet operation and the fact that it requires no ‘B battery current. It really takes the place of a crystal detector, but does not have to be adjusted as is c tomary with the well known cat- whisker. Tubes are divided also into two other general classes—soft tubes and hard tubes. The word ‘hard’ when used in reference to a vacuum tube means that it is of the high-vacuum ty ubes are sometimes given a new number or symbol simply to ind. that they fit the standard sucket. This is Hlustrated in the case of the WD-11 and WD-12 drycell tubes, which will operate on a single dry cell since they have a terminal volt- age rated at 1.1 volts. The WD-12 is just like the WD-11, so far as its ire concerned, such a change. which helps to keep the electrons | with them 3 -201-A and C-301-A tubes | moving. | circle of acquaintances. normal size ones you are your set. in the neutrodynes and in other sets where storage batteries are used for In addition to making uln‘ known st Co. makes e A ouct Sodion Newer Type. being designed all the time.
