The modern explorers In the persons of radio experimenters are seeking for new fields wherein the large number of broadcasters which cannot he accommodated on the exist- ing wave lensths may move, Many experimental stations are now itting off wave lengths below 100 meters and instances of transmis- sion on e lengths ax low as four wre not uncommon. Station WGY of Schenectady and station KDKA at Pittsburgh have been doing a considerable amount of experimenting on wave lengths helow 100 meters and have brought to light many interesting facts regarding such | transmission and reception. 1t has been noticed that when short | wave lengihs mre used, the fading effect which often characterizes longer wave transmission and - reception is | practically eliminated. ‘The use of | short_waves then has hesn advanced |as 4 means of eliminating this objecs tionable feature of transmission on the present broadcasting wave lengths. It has also been found that the short waves can be used much more effec. | tively than the longer waves in direc- tonal transmission by means of wave reflectors of the type -perfgcted by | Marconi for directional transmission. Another important phenomenon that | has been noticed in the transmission ‘m.qmun at wave lengths below 100 | |lower wave lengths—say, than at the higher wave lengths, and that while the absorption may greater during the daylight hours, the increased efficiency more than makes up for any loss due to increased ah- sorption. A still more interesting discovery Is that static 18 practically ahsent in com- parison to the static disturbances at the higher wave lengths. When tests have been and more definite information is avail- be | completed | able on short-wave length .transmis- | sian and reception. it will be possible to accommodate all the stations now operating and many more without any interference problem. The difference in wave length of two | stations Is not a clear indicator of the interference possibilities of the two stations. When sizing up the relative location. of two stations from an in terference viewpoint it is best to con- sider the characteristics of the station in terms of frequency rather than in terms of wave length At short-wave lengihs the difference in frequentcy in terms of kilocycles per second Is greater per meter dif- ference in wave length than it the higher wave lengths To avoid interterence between neizh- boring stations on a frequenc two statiéns should he sepa at least 20 kilocycles. If we t lower wave lengths—say. tween 60 and 70 meters —the ence in frequencies would he cycles, so that at least 35 could operate within that band with out causing any interference.
