The wildest flight of imagination could not paint this play other than |a sordid drama. Possession becomes he dominant note of life—possession ssion of a woman, pos- n. A drab New Eng- land of the middle of the nineteenth century—for which the author must take responsibility—is the setting. California and its gold and the great West are beckoning to these people, who have struggled for existence in a country which demanded un- X ing toil for a mere livelihood. The play draws a hideous picture {of life, with the only faintly re- | deeming feature the final revelation {of the love of Abbie and Eben, the e e will Tinning SRS g THE EVENING AMUSEMENTS regrets, if one is entitled to a regret in the fice of such excellent entertain- ment, is that Shaw has little opportu- nity to reveal his decided flair for comedy. He does excellently with small comedy ppportunity presented in a spiritualistic sketch with Miss Brice and “The King's Gal,” the pre- nale. The solo dancing numbers, nicely conceived and splendidly executed, were the work of Miss Ledova, al- though the credit first was awarded to May Corey Kitchen through an error on the program. There was no mention_of Miss Ledova on the pro- gram. Certainly she deserved it, but typographical errors are typographi- cal errors. Beauty, comedy, melody—all in plenteous quantity and of the high- est quality—those are “The Music Box Revue.” POLI'S—“My Girl.” A musical treatise on the method in STAR, The music is highly acceptable, and the staging by ,Walter Brooks de- lightful. The cast numbers at least five real headliners. True, there isa dragging start, with much talky-talk atmosphere, but after the chorus of eight arrives on the scene, and when the familiar figure of the bootlegger drifts in, the pep qualities become sufficienty de- veloped to swing the play along in snappy style: There are a number of songs which took exceedingly well. “Rain- bow of/Jazz,” to the accompaniment of the Charleston, is the highwater mark for the chorus efforts, and “It Never Will Get You a Thing,” sung by George Sweet, Is effecfive. Sev- eral comic songs are clever and en- Jjoyable. ° George Sweet as Bob White, Fran- ces Upton as the ingenue, Edna Morn in the lead, and Roger Gray in the lead-comic, come in for hon- ors. As clever a little vamp as one would want to grace a party is Jayne Auburn as Cynthia Redding—and, strange to say, her hair matches her name. She has a trick of batting the eyes which reminds one of a double Clssy Fitzgerald wink. All in all the cast is well balanced, WASHINGTON, D.
