Shipbuilding, sugar re- ning, some branches of the clothing | industry and meat packing all seem ‘to be relatively quiet in trend. The manufacturers of cotton and woolen Boods, boots and shoes, and the like show the effects of hard times, though recent tendencies are more encourag- ing. These industries have much to contend with and may show a decline for the year. On the other hand, the irom and steel industry is picking up; the agricultural implement business and the fertilizer business are rapidly recovering. The hoslery and knit Eoods manufacturers are doing better, while the people are clamoring for rayon so that manufacturers of rayon products cannot supply the demand. Times Poor in Sections. When it comes to a discussion of the different localities we find that certain sections, such as the coal di: tricts, are suffering with the present conditions of the coal trade. The. first is that the Federal Reserve Board has the financial situation well in hand and its first job is to steady the boat and not let it tip too much one side or the other. The second reason is that prosperity areas are made up of two factors, namely, the product of price and pro- duction. The spirit of co-operation between manufacturer and merchant, the de- velopment of the chain store, and many similar factors are all tending to make business less speculative and o, more stable. A spirit of ‘live and let live’ is developing, and this is dis- tinctly a healthy sign. The general improvement in busi- ness is well shown by the ehart, which registered 9 per cent below nor: mal a year ago this time, and reached the low point of this year in May, reg- istering 2 per cent below “normal.
