The result was a very much mixed price movement. Railway shares and public utilitie which done nothing much for several ds , were taken up and some spectacular ¢ s occurred in high-priced indus Pennsylvania 'he rise could perfect counted for by the attractivene: of its yield under present money condi- tions. But the Street sets a good deal of store by the gossip about future financing being done with stock, in which event Pennsylvania would have to sell above its §50 par. Many Other Advances. Advances of 1 to over 2 points oc- curred in New York Central, Union Pacific, Norfolk and Western, Louts- ville and Nashville, Great Northern preferred, re, Lackawanna and Western, the Seaboard Air Lines, Tex- as and Pacific, Rock Island, St. Loul: Southwestern and St. Louis-San F cisco. Strength in the Southern stoc] was referred in some quarters to the Florida land boom. Some of the North- western shares were bought on in mations that the August earnings statements would make a highly fa- vorable showing. Atlantlc Coast Line got into new high ground above 200. A sensational jump of more than 1% points in Detroit Edison came with such suddenness as to puzzle the financial district. The contention was that a stock like this could not becom worth so much more overnight unle: jmportant developments were impend- ing. But the story of the company oing into a combination was nothing But Eossip. An increase in the divi- dends from the present §8 was also discussed. Harvester in Upturn. The upturn in International Har- vester signified better appreciation of the company’s complete recovery of earning power. Talk of a stock divi- dend besides an increase in the cash dividend accompanied the violent up- rush in Western Union, General Bak ing, Nash Motors, Fleischmann, Chry ler and United Drug were other high- priced industrials which made new tops. United States Cast Iron Pipe shot forward and so did Eastman Kodak. Among the public utilities Brooklyn Edison was a feature, getting well across 40, American and Foreign Power was very active and strong, and so were the Market Street Rail- ways. The rise in the last named brought out reports that negotiations for the sale of the property to the city of San Francisco had been re- opened. Emphatic denial of the reports which had_accompanied the 13-point jump in Pullman on Thursday caused a sharp reaction. New York Air Brake dropped over 3 points and the A shares a point on the suggestion that the dividend on the former might be reduced. General American Tank Car reached new high figures. MARKET CLOSES STRONG. 18.—1n reached a mew high. v well be a n- Specialties Buoyant in Spite of Higher Call Money. NEW YORK, September 18 (#).— The closing was strong. With a further rise in call money to 5 per cent United States Steel and other leaders showed a tendency to lag, but high-priced specialties were buoyant. Kelsey Wheel spurted up 9 poinis and gains of 4 to 6:% points were registered by du Pont, Shattuck Stores and Brooklyn Edison befors trading closed at 2:30 o'clock. Saies approxi- mated 1,600,000 shares. The heavy demand for the rails was in anticipation of excellent Au- gust earnings statements which ap- pear to be justified in view of the unprecedented freight traffic that month. There were a few outstanding exceptions to thisgeneralupwardtrend, Pullman losing about half of its 13. point gain of yester General Railway Signal falling back 5% points and New York Air Brake issues crum- bling to new low levels of the year on unfavorable dividend rumors. The so-called “rich men’s stocks’ were again buoyant with a jump of over 5 points, with United States Cast Iron Pipe as one of the late features. Florida, Western Nor- visible shipping demand COTTONSEED' FIGURES FAR ABOVE LAST YEAR Cottonseed crushed in August to- taled 115,381 tons, compared with 62,- 140 in August last vear, and stocks on hand at mills August 31 amounted to 189,542 tons, compared with 93,822 a year ago, the Census Bureau today announced. Cottonseed products manufactured in August and on hand August 31 were: Crude oil produced, 33,845,909 pounds, compared with 17,382,741, and on hand, 15,040,947 pounds, compared with 8,258,260. Refined oil produced, 19,577,403 pounds, compared with 17,582,741, and on hand, 92,212,147 pounds, compared with 54,042,015 AUGUST SILVER OUTPUT UNDER JULY TOTALS NEW YORK, September 18 (#).— August productions of silver in North America and Peru amounted to 15,637,677 ounces, compared with 16,- 162,562 in July. The April output of 16,187,113 ounces was the high of the year. The total for the eight months this year was 124,427,683 ounces, a monthly average of 15,553,460, against 15,950,103 in the same period of 1924. EXTRA DIVIDEND SKIPPED. NEW YORK. September 18 (#).— American Window Glass Machine Co. declared the regular quarterly divi- dend of 113 per cent on the common stock, on which 1 per cent extra previously had been paid quarterly. NEW YORK, September 18.—An- other spectacular upturn of 15 points in Florida, Western and Northern 78 was the outstanding feature of the day in" bonds. In a week this issue has had a net advance of around 45 points, the vio- lent rise being accompanied by one of the largest turnover in any specu- lative bond on the list. Two and three points between sales were no uncommon phenomenon during this wild speculation, all of which was founded upon the title the honds carry to 10 shares of stock of the Florida Land Co. During the first hour of trading today there was a range of 17 points between the high and the low. In general the speculative rails were In favor today. The leader was New Haven debenture 6s of 1943, which crossed 93 to a new high rec- ord on an unusually large volume. There was also active trading In Missouri Pacific bonds, the General 4s of which is one of the few railway bonds in its class which has not en- joyed any large advance and is still selling to vield well over 6 per cent. The St. Paul junior bonds were bought on expectation of a favorable August earnings statement and of early putting into effect of the reor- ganizaiton plan. $30,000,000 Argentine Loan Next. Market Street Raflway, crossing par for the first time this year, was the strong spot among the utilities. The honds went up along with the stock on reports that negotlations were to be resumed for the sale of the proper- ties to the City of San Francisco. In foreign honds the new German Agricultural Bank 7s attracted the most attention, with an advance to a new high premium over the offering price. The most important new for elgn financing in the near future will be an additional. $30,000,000 loan to Argentina. FLORIDA RUSH HOLDS UP. JACKSONVILLE, Fla., September 18 (Specfal).—In August 12,550 tourist vehicles, carrying 49,118 persons, crossed the St. Johns Toll Bridge here, which is the gateway to the Florida east coast. By the Associated Press CHICAGO, September 18.—Wheat prices underwent a sag during the ear- ly dealings today, and showed but lit- tle power to rally. There was an ab- sence of the aggressive Eastern buying which has been conspicuous of late. Furthermore, houses with Northwest- ern connections were fairly active sell- new erop in Alberta, Canada, was turning out to be the largest the prov- ince has ever had. Chicago opening prices, 7% off to 1 up, December 1.50% to 1.51 and May 1.53% to 1.53%, were followed by something of a reaction, but then by fresh downturns. Corn and oats, as well as wheat, lacked support. Recent ideal weather for the maturing of corn was a factor, After opening at % to 113 decline, De- cember 81% to 81%, the corn market held near to the initial range.
