" SHIPS'SALEPLAN | FAILS OF APPROVAL Board Rejects Munson Offer 1o Buy Four Liners for $3,080,000. Recommendationg of President Palmer of the Fleet Corporation that INDIANS HELD TAX FREE. Need Not Pay on Ingomes From Land Rentals, Sargent Rules. Attorney General Sargent in an opinion rendered to Secretary Mellon has held that the income of the Quapaw Indians of Oklahoma is not subject to the Federal income tax laws, provided the income fs from rents and royalties and other returns from allotted lands restricted as to alienation. Among the reasons was empha- sized that it never had been the pol- icy of Congress to legislate for the Indians along with the other citizens of the United States. THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 1925. _— FOOD FADDISTS HIT - BY MEDICAL EDITOR Dr. Morrie Fishbien Scores “All or Nothing” Breads and “Panaceas’ for Health. By the Associated Press. BUFFALO, N. Y., September 18.— Food faddists were roundly scored by Dr. Morris Fishbien, editor of the American Medical Journal, in an ad- dr before the American Bakers’ As- | sociation convention here. The time has arrived for calling a halt to the growing procession of slogans that tend to promote panaceas for health and well-being, he sald. It is for the individual physician to de- termine whether his patient ought to use breads or other foods that de- part from the standard product or the nor.aal diet. “Th» scientific physiclan welcomes the establishment of a standard loaf of bread made according to the best sclentific_evidence s to what is de- manded in bread by the taste of the public, by our knowledge of nutrition and of the mysterious vitamins,” Dr. Fishbien sald. “Such a product can be included in diets both for the sick and for the well with a clear under- standing of the effect it may have on digestion and growth. The physician opposes the promotion of any single nothing policy’ as the one substance important to health or to the control of disease. S “In efforts at education of the public which the modern physician believes is the most important factor in length- ening the span of life, faddists, notions must be attacked with all the vigor and influence that the scientflic pen can command, either by purchase of advertising space or by the contribu- tion of articles published for the pub- lic good. The baking industry of this country in its scientific study of bread and breadmaking and in support of such ideals may be assured of medi- cal support.” It takes the public about 10 years to get over a popular delusion; but it article of dlet according to the ‘all oralways gets over it. VICAR OBJECTS TO WOMEN SMOKING ON TOMBSTONES Says He Does Not Mind Either Of- fense Separately, But Calls Com- bination Unseemly. By the Assoclated Press. WORCESTERSHIRE, England, September 18.—The Rev. H. Roder, vicar of the Parish of -Churchill and Blakedown, objects to women smok- ing cigarettes when seated on the tombstones in his churchyard. Writ- ing in his parish magazine, he says, “Smoking is not a sin,” and admits that sitting on tombstones is a harm- less if morbid relaxation, but declares that “the combined effect is, to put it mildly, scarcely seeming, if not posi- tively irreverent.” e A number of firms In Germany are using airpianes, conspicuously marked with the firm trade pame, in flying ex- hibitions s an advertising stunt. Commissioner Haney, whose re- peated efforts to have Mr. Palmer removed from office have brought a request from President Coolidge for his resignation, which he refused, ‘was one of the three voting against the sale. Chairman O'Connor and Commissioner Thompson *were un- derstood to have voted with him. Second Palmer Setback. Commissioner Haney announced afterward that he cast his vote in the negative only after the board de- feated, 4 to 2, his motion to delay consideration of the bids until Com- missioner Benson could be present. It was the second time that the board declined to concur in Presi- dent Palmer's recommendations, it having turned back to the Fleet Cor- poration some weeks ago offers for 200 ships for scrapping. The nego- iiations were reopened and the ships subsequently sold to Henr The Munson Co. offered $7 each of the four ships of the Pan- American Line. The same figure was bid by the Moore & McCormack Steamship Co., but the Munson con- cern, by virtue of a provision in its contract with the Shipping Board, was privileged to equal the highest bid. He be- lieved they should bring not less than $1,000,000 each The commissioner did not press for action on his resolution to put the Shipping Board on record as favor- ing removal of President Palmer. He said he would let the subject rest until Commissioner Benson, who returned from a & could attend the board meeting. Commissioners Lissner and Hill, who with Commissioner Plummer voted for the sale today, were under- stood to have delayed plans to leave Washington in order to attend the meeting.
