NEW YORK, September 16.—Fol- Jowing the selling movement toward Tuesday’s close the stock market did better today. It was felt that the posi- tion had been improved by the heavy selling and consequently operations for the rise were renewed in some di- rections. General Motors went across par for the first time and this was In- terpreted to indicate the attitude of powerful interests toward the market in general. B. & 0. and Pennsy Strong. Standard railway shares came in for more attention. Another rise of a point in Baltimore and Ohto was ac- companied by talk that the dividend might be raised from the present 5 to § per cent. Pennsylvania passed 49 for the first time this year. The rumor that the company plans to do new financing after a while with stock, in which awent the price would have to be at leass up to its par of $50, has been often denied. Still the story per- sists. Reading and ,Lehigh Valley were both up a point and‘a half. Industrials Come Back. High-priced industrials came back with the same ease with which they had gone down on Tuesday. General Electric started in 2 points lower, then rallied There were advances of 3 to points in stocks like Mack TPrucks, Americs ar ahuck. Commercial Solvents and United Drug. Chrysler made a new high and du Pont, following the General Motors move, rose itly. Fisher Body, also moving W eneral Motors, ran up nearly 4 points. N York Traction shares went high « 2t the start, but those who had bouga’ .n the primary election were taking profits later in the day. Extra Dividend Gossip. triking advance in General was attended by talk that npt t the stock be regarded as a 7 per cent dividend payer, but more in the way of extra dividends might be looked for. Other motor shares did better and so did the rub- ber and tire stocks. The heavy turn- over in Continental Motors on Tues- day around and just above 11 was fol- lowed by a further rise across the pre- vious high of the year of 113%. More interest was _displaved in e of the public utilities. Among were International Telephone and Telegraph, Philadelphia Company and American and _Iorel Power. Atlantic Gulf and West Indies rallied quickly. Gimbe: Brothers stock had & notable jump ¥ over 4 points. Operations for the rise continued in the low-priced Reynolds Spring. American Bosch Magneto and New York Canners were in demand, and S0 was Weston Electric Instrument. GENERAL MOTORS SALES AHEAD OF LAST YEAR NEW YORK, September 16 () — August sales of General Motors cars to users exceeded those of August last vear. The total of 76,546 cars and trucks, compared with 54,842, Sales to dealers were 75,973, against 48,614 a year ago. Seward Prosser, chair- man of the Bankers' Trust Co. of New York has been elected a director of General Motors Acceptance Corpora- tlon, which gives credit and financial services to General Motors dealers and purchasers. NEW YORK, September 16.—Ex- cept for foreign issues, which were reactionary, the general bond market was firmer today in both investment and speculative issues. The feature was a_spectacular rise amounting to more th:@ 7 points in Florida, Western and Northern 7s, making a new high record. The bond was originally offered in May, 1924, ut _par and only recently has been called for payment on November 15 next at 104, but today it sold at 164, the difference between the market and the call prices representing the estimated value of the 10 shares of stock of the Florida Land Co., title to which is carried by each $1,000 bond. i Foreign Bonds React. Moderate improvement early in the day was made by the local tractions, but most of the gain was lost later as profit taking made itself felt. Reaction in the forelgn group was quite pronounced, especially in French bonds. French Republic 8s got down below 105 and French 7s below 93. At one time also German 7s solq below 99, The other recent speculative favorit in this group were most of them frac- tionally lower. New Issue Quickly Taken. That this slight decline did not rep- resent any less favorable attitude to- ward foreign securities was demon- strated by the success of the $25,000,- 000 Central Bank for Agriculture (Ger- many) 7 per cent farm loan_bonds of- fered today at 93 to yield 7.63 per cent. Active buying on the part of houses with Eastern connections had much to do with the upturn in values, and so, likewise, did reports of decreased ar- rivals from the domestic Spring crop Northwest. About §930,000,000 of new life fnsur- ance was written in August by 45 com panies, who have in force about 81 per cent of the total outstanding insurance of all United States legal reserve com panies. This figure broke all previous August records, and, with the excep tion of December, 1923; December. 1924, and May this year, was the high est ever re ded for any month. The August total marked an increase of $280,090,000 over August last vear, and was more than double the amount wistten in August, 1921 Classified, the increase in ordinary {life insurance written last month, com- pared with the same month last year, was 28.4 per cent; industrial, 27.9 per cent, and group, 4562 per cent. ‘Washington Stocks Lively. A buying wave of miniature though bullish _proportions visited the Wash ington Stock Exchange this morning, resulting in a P upturn. Riggs National Bank stock benefited recording a net gain of 10 points {to 400, the highest figure quoted since increase a few years ago. | Opening at 395 on a sale of 10 shares. the issue climbed a point on the fol lowing sale of similar size and then jumped to its peak on sales of 30 Shares. Railway common, which has been | quiet for several days, advanced 2 points to 160 on sales of 50 shares, and Railway preferred also strength ened to 8612 on sales of 113 shares Traction stock was strong at 99i. with selling confined to odd lots, and Mergenthaler rose to 186 on trans actions involving 51 shares. Gas was steady and strong at 631, as was Lanston at 84% on selling involving 160 shares. > Bonds were quiet Car Loadings Decline. Loadings of freight cars for the week ended September 6 were 21,490 cars less than the record of 1,124,436 cars established in the preceding week, the American Railway Associa- tion announced today. The decrease was laid to a falling off in the loading of coal, grain and grain products, forest products and ore, although miscellaneous freight, merchandise and less than carload lot freight, coke and live stock registered Increases. Although this was the eighth con- secutive week that loadings have ex- ceeded the million-car mark, the asso- ciation said, present heavy traffic is being moved virtually without car or locomotive shortage. The total for the week was shown to have been 181,643 higher than for the same week last year.
