HUGHES. ystem for Saving. ze New England trust put out a plan for c saving designed for those - clients who could put aside more a month. The needs < this line of individuals of more rate means were ieft to institu- s which m; ty of serv- ing that group, including the savings banks and the building and loan asso- ciations. At first thought it though investors able to s per month : plan pr would be selves and § scheme for matter of f professional m large incomes whose attention is ab- sorbed ¢ with their pro- fessional and have neither the time nor inclination for the de- tailed study of securities which intel- ligent investment demands. For these the idea will undoubtedly prove at- tractive. Without golng into particulars, the scheme involves the purchase of ap- proved securities either outright or on the installment plan with the rein- vestment of all income. It is astonish- ing how rapidly savings accumulate when the annual interest is consistent- 1y reinvested. If the initial sum is \ $20,000 and the interest rate is 5 per cent, the principal and accumulated interest in 20 years amounts to $53,062.85; if the interest rate Is 5'g per cent, the sum in 20 years would be $58,365.40, and if it is 6 per cent the corresponding amount Is $64,263.09. This showing has a lesson for the smaller inves s well. He, too, can increase his resources proportionately even If he has to begin on a much more moderate scale. It would be in- teresting 4f the statistics were avail- able to compare the results of such a systematic savings plan with that obtained from a similar amount used in speculation. My guess is that 99 times out of 100 the comparison would be to the disadvantage of specula- tion. may seem as wve as much minimum under the st company re of them- need any particular stematic saving. SIS S P DILSTOCKS PILELP IN SPITE OF PRIGES Recent Cut in Gasoline Charges Laid to Clamoring of Motorists. BY J. C. ROYLE Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, September 16— Petroleum producer§ have been un- lable to control the flow of oil despite the recent drastic cuts in gasoline prices. Many of them said today they anticipated additional cuts in crude oil quotations and that as a result many refiners are unloading their surplus gasoline stock prelim- inary to stocking up again at lower costs. Some oil company officials admit frankly they see no prospects for higher prices for either crude or refined products in the near future Despite the fact that gasoline con- sumption is almost at its peak for the year and for all time, and many industrial plants and householders are preparing to change from coal to ofl for fuel, off of the Stand- ard Oll Co. ifornia say there need be no fear of shortage of future supplies. New Fields Discovered. They point out that where pro- duction has fallen off, new fields have always been found and that there are a billion acres of land in this country alone geographically and geologically favorable to the presence of oil which have not vet been ex- plored. The statement declares real conservation lies in the development {of oil and gas engines which will vield double the results now possible from the same amount of fuel. In the midcontinent field petroleum men predict further reductions in the price of crude with even lower line prices than now exist. An offic {of one of the largest companies oper- ating in the midcontinent field said to- ay he believed public demand for lower gasoline prices had as much to do with recent gasoline cuts as any other factor. The volume of gasoline has been en- hanced by the use of various “crack- ing” processes which yield more vol- ume In less time than the older re- fining methods. Crude oil in the mid- continent and intermountain districts is held by producers at around 7% to 815 cents. These prices, refiners say, leave only a’ minimum margin between the cost of crude and the prices paid for refined products. (Copyright. 1925.)
