NEW YORK., September the biggest turnover which the} Stock Exchange has seen in some time a further advance occurred to- day. Many new high records were established and the general price average again went into new high ground. Motor stocks were again the center of interest, but they by no means monopolized attention. Rubber and tire shares, copper and smelting issues, some of the sugars, various high-priced industrials, and finally the rails were at different stages ac- tive at advancing prices. Advances Tmpressive. The list of new highs was impres- sive and it included stocks of many different types. There was American Smelting in the metal section. There was Atlantic Coast Line crossing 200. Pittsburgh and West Virginia and Northern Pacific among the rails. In the motor group there were Packard, Hupp, Willys Overland, Studebaker and Nash and Motometer, Timken Roller Bearing and Goodrich also sold at the best of the yvear. Then there were Sears, Roebuck. Simmons Co.. Weber & Heilbronner, Howe Sound, the American Tobaccos, Fleischman. Case Threshing Machine preferred. General Asphalt preferred, Pierce Ar- row prior preferred, General Outdoor Advertising “A,” Nunnally, American Steel Foundries and Railway Steel Spring, which crossed 150 for the first time. 14.—With Sharp Gains in Motors. In the market for the motor shares the advances were more abrupt than they have been at any time. Willys Overland common sold within a few minutes atter the opening 2 points higher than where it had left off Saturday. Studebaker made a new top above and Dodge Bros. pre- ferred above §S. Hupp Motors, around 22, compared with last week’s close of 20%. It took only a short effort to siart Packard going again. Once the buying got into these stocks. it went up with a rush. The outburst of buving in the rails came after several days of inactivity in this quarter, but, as usual, did not last very long. Seaboard Air Line common and preferred, Rock Island and Kansas City «Southern were the leaders among the lower-priced is sues, while among the standard divi- ers Louisville and Nashville points and Atchison and New ntral a point or more. Coal Stock in Rally. The old maxim that it does not do to sell on a strike was borne out by the rise in Delaware and Hudson, which was quoted 6 points above its low of a week ago, with Reading up 2 points. Violent fluctuations occurred in Uni- versal Pipe and Radiator preferred. The stock jumped over & points to 90, promptly fell back, and then rose again. The common was very active at an advance of over 3 points. General Cigars ran up over two General Asphalt, usually as an oil stock, gained over two points and Marland Oil crossed 45 after very large transactions around that figure. American Sugar rose nearly two points and Indian Motor Cycle the same. Fisk Rubber advanced to its previous top figures of the year. Trading Very Excited. The rise in Fisk Rubber above 24, where it duplicated its high for the vear, was tardy recognition of the remarkable improvement in earnings. especially since the company began to get benefits of the 40 per cent increase in tire prlces In today's markets speculation took on a more excited appearance. Trans- actions in stocks ran well up to the two million share ma Some 40 individual issues surpassed their pre- vious bests for the year. But neither the increase in business done nor the wide reaching price advances was the essential feature. What most attracted attention was the rapid bidding up, one after another, of individual stocks and groups of stocks. It was a more violent performance than anvthing seen in the last month and suggested a greater element of artificiality. With all that may be said for the prosperity of the automobile industry, with its unparalleled volume of busi- ness for this time of vear and its extraordinary cash resources, even motor stocks do not suddenly become worth a peint or two more just over night. Such movements, occurring as they did today, showed speculative enthusiasm at a pretty advanced stage. MARKET CLOS TRON NEW YORK, September 14 ().— The closing was strong. Gaining strength and vigor in the final hour, the market swept forward under the leadership of United States Steel, | which rallied to around 125. Nash | Motors jumped 11 points. General Railway Signal 7% and Radio. Sloss Sheffield Steel, Pullman and California Packing 314 to 4. Total sales were slightly below 2,000,000 shares. The rapid rise in Amer 4 which attained a record peak close to 250, and other high-priced industrials suggested urgent short covering. Tnited States Cast Iron Pipe sold 6 points above last week's final quota- tion, and International Shoe, Mack Truck, American Tobacco. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, September 14.— Strength in today's bond market was not confined, as last week, to the for- eign group. Other issues were taken up today, some of them rails and some of them industrials, but all of the more speculative type. One particularly strong feature was furnished in International Mercantile Marlne 6s, which, selling at 85, were up 21 points from the low of a month ago. Virginia Carolina Chem- ical 7s, at 102, were up fractionally, and the 7is with warrants, which had gained nearly 7 points last week, added mlmost 2 points more today. Some of the lacal tractions were in International Telephone and Telegraph debenture 5135 were heavy below 105. Advances in Rail Liens. Among the rafls a_jump of over 3 points appeared in Florida Western and Northern which, closing at 15113 Saturday. sold at 155 today. This entire issue has been called for payment on November 15 next at 104, 50 that the price now represents the redemption value, plus the market ap praisal of 10 shares of stock of the Land Co. of Florida. Denver and Rio Grande Western 5s reacted under profit-iaking. The new Seaboard financing is scheduled to be announced Thuraday. Tt will consist of $10.000.- 000 in Seaboard consolidated 6s, priced according to report at 94%, which was about the market today. Old Sea- board issues were strong. Strength in Other Issues. In forelgn bonds there was further buving of Hungarian 7s, carrying the price of a new high on this mavement, and of Bolivia 8s at their recent top. French bonds were fairly steady, not withstanding a zood deal of realizing. In the high-grade domestic invest ment obligations United States Steel sinking fund 3¢ were the feature, up half a_point.
