The nagging teacher has little chance of bullding character in her puplls but simply kills any inclination they may have for effort, Sister | Miriam Augustine of Mount St. Vin- cent, New York, told the Catholic Sisters' Conference, which met in the McMahon Hall, Catholic University, this morning. The meeting was the principal event on the program for the first session of the eleventh annual conference on Catholle charities, which opened to- v. The first duty of the teacher, she said, is to inspire high ideals, and this can_ be accomplished, she said, by working of the psychology of hero- worship. The natural inclination of the Cathollc teacher, Sister Miriam said, would be to make Christ the single hero to be held up before the pupils for emulation, but this has a drawback because it leaves the child without any lesser marker. The teacher, she said, should select from Instances of ordinary men and women who have achleved Christ- like character. It is essential, she told the teachers, to impress on the minds of the class that heroism is not primarily physical, but that holi- patience and the courage to suffer are more inspiring and rarer than aggressive courage. The child, she said, too often mistakes restless: ness for bravery. Girls, in particular, she said, must be inspired to the virtue of fortitude. Continual fault-finding, she held, leads almost always to the very faults which the teacher or parents seek to correct. It is essential, she said, that the teacher make friends of the children, to whom they are willing to talk frankly. Charities Body Meets. The conference was opened with an address of welcome by Right Rev. Thomas J. Shahan, rector of Catholic University. Sister Miriam Regina of Brookland, chairman of the conference, gave a brief report of the activities since the last meeting. The executive com- mittee of the Charities Conference were registered. The diocesan di- rectors of Catholic charities are meet- with Rev. Edwin L. Leonard of Baltimore presiding. Rev. Robert F. Keegan of New York City will speak on soclal work in rural communities. Dr. John O'Grady of Washington will speak on lay par- ticipation in Catholic charitfes. GUN INVENTOR DIES. F. M. Garland Produced Rapid- Fire Weapon Bearing His Name.
