NEW YORK, September 4.—Motor stocks were prominent again in the stock market today, along_with_the leathers and the Greater New York tractions. Most of the leading moves were upward and the opinion was commonly expressed that such ele- ments of unsoundness as existed a week ago had been pretty well elim- inated by the shake-out which oc- curred the first two days of the pres- ent_week. There was nothing new in the au- tomobfle industry to account for the buying. New leaders were taken up, especially Studebaker and the Dodge stocks. In Dodge there was a big turnover on the rise. The pre- ferred on Its investment merits reach- ed new high ground. Pierce Arrow preferred had another runup and the rise in the common was well sus- tained. General Motors displayed the same strong support which has been hack of the stock all week. Feature Among Rails. Among the rails the feature was the continued advance into new high ter- ritory in the Gulf, Mobile and North- ern issues. Pittsburgh and West Vir- ginia, representing a property which stands to benefit considerably from he increased demand for soft coal Auring the anthracite strike, ran up over 3 points. Chesapeake and Ohio vas one of the leading soft-coal car- riers and was strong, St. Louis-South- western gaining points. At one stage Union Paciiic was up over a point, while New York Central at 120 compared with the low of 118 Wed- nesday. But the dividend-paying rails a5 a group were not active. Special buying continued in Skelly Oil. Most other oil stocks were doing nothing, so this suggested a reason of an individual nature. The Central Leather shares were taken up, antici- pating a favorable showing for the September quarter. Goodrich stood out conspicuously with a rise of over 2 points. In stocks of the specialty class there were sharp advances in Sears-Roebuck, Macy, Remington Typewriter, Ward Baking and Childs Restaurant. Signal Tumbles 21 Points. There were a few weak points. One of these was Buffalo and Susquehanna, which dropped over 6 to a new low of 76. General Railway Signal had a sheer: fall of 21 points, following the announcement of the new financial plan. Thé decline was ascribed not to disappointment over the terms of the new arrangement, but simply to the familiar selling after the news was out. The chief motive back of the rise in General Motors has been the con- | fidence that it can be regarded as a 7 per cent stock, whether or not the dividend is formally raised from 6 to 7 per cent or whether the addi- tonal 1 per cent is paid right along, after the fashion of United States Steel Corporation, as an extra divi- dend. Figures were given out today showing the expansion in General Motors’ foreign business. During the first six months of 1925 41,732 cars were sold abroad, as against 33, in the same period in 1924. In 1922 the foreign business was valued at something less than $20,000,000. In 1924 it had jumped to nearly $51.- 600,000 Dodge Brothers at New High. Dodge Brothers preferred made a new high, and the A shares showed a stronger upward tendency than at any time since the: original rise. Even around 85, the preferred returns 8% per cent, and this has attracted a lot | of investment buying. On the basis of results for the first six months, Dodge earned at the rate of some $8 & share on the A stock, and the ratio of current assets to current liabiiitles was sald to be better than 3 to 1 MARKET CLOSES STRONG. 20 Am Car&Fdy (8) 108 Am Chicle....... 42% Am Express (6). 135 Am & For Pow. . 5 Am&F Ppf (7). NEW YORK, September 4.—Today's bond market was firm fof investment issues and strong for speculative and semi-speculative obligations. More attention was paid to foreign issues, in which group there was al- most uniform improvement. German 78 were the leaders, making a new high above 98 on heavy transactions. There was a sharp upturn in French cities 8s, all three issues, amounting to nearly a point and a half. Each of (l;ese bonds also made a new high for 1925, Large Yields Are Factor. The only explanation for the buying of the French cities 6s was that the maturity yield was larger than that obtainable on the direct obligations of the French government. Czechoslov: 88 retained their gains of Thursday. Most of the recent speculative favorites among the rails were again in demand. The leader was Denver and Rlo Grande Western Gs above 66 for the first time on this movement. St. Louis-San Francisco incomes and New Haven debenture 6s of 1948 were both strong. New buying came into the Florida Western and Northern 7s and the Chesapeake and Ohio con- yertible 5s advanced nearly 2 points. New Seaboard financing is understood to be scheduled for the near future. Tractions in Heavy Demand. Among New York City tractions, Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit. 6s -were in heavy demand above 90. Selling at $0 today they were still 2 points below the high of the year. There was go further weakness in the sugar bo Of the oils, Skelly 6133 were up o3 a point at one tim GOLD BASIS MOVES 254 | Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, September ' 4.—The continued advance in Ttalian, Nor wegian and Danish currencies had a common cause, namely, preparations for return to a gold basis. Italy can only do this by devalueing the old paper currency, quite IHkely on a basis of 5 to 1, resented by the current quotations for lira. Denmark is pretty well back to old-time parity. - Norway has made such progress in recent weeks that the final closing of the gap is readily predicted. FANCY YEA(‘HES HIGBEB XEW YORK, Septembgr 4 (Special), —Fancy peaches were in light receipt today and prices advanced. Elbertas from the lower Hudson Valley district wholesaled at $3.50 per bushel basket. Most of the New Jersey Elbertas were very irregular In condition and sold from $1.75 to $3.50 per bushel basket. By the Assoclated Pres CHICAGO. September 4.—Members | of the Chicago Board of Trade, by a vote of 601 to 281, yesterday author- ized the board of directors to submit rules and amendments calculated to prevent erratic price fluctuations in future contracts, as suggested by Sec- retary of Agriculture Jardine. Modern Rules Needed. The vote was not upon a specific amendment, but merely on the propo- sition of authorizing the board to proceed in the work of formulating suggested rules under which a mod- ern clearing-house system would be established. Whatever rules finally are decided upon after hearings, in which all members will be privileged to offer their suggestions, will again be sub- mitted to the membership. The present clearing system of the gin€ T Chicago exchange developed gradual- Iy with the growing grain trade here, and is held by some traders to be {nadequate for present-day trade con- ditions. Great Step Forward. Other exchanges, motably Minne- apolis and Kansas City, have more modern systems, and it is not un likely that the new arrangement here will follow more closely the rules on those floors. Frank L. Carey, president of the board, declared the action was “a great step forward, 'which will benefit every one interested in the marketing 5 urm 154 128y 1.00% 88 il maiy nkn abwrl I3 ER3 S8k 353 a=Zs e jrie] isie s -jconu GETS ABOVE $1 IN FUTURES MARKET Adds Nearly 2 Cents Per Bushel to Yesterday's Rise—Drought Is Cause.
