THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON. D. €., FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 1925. Store Open All Day Saturday—Closed Monday, Labor Day LANSBURGH & BRO. 7th to 8th to E—FAMOUS FOR QUALITY S!NCE 1860—Franklin 7400 ERCHANDISING is a coined word, fashjoned from ‘“merchandise” and adding the suffix “ing” to mean the act or operation of handling merchandise. It is a word sometimes misunderstood by both the public and persons engaged in hand- ling merchandise. To some it means merely the buying of goods.for one price and selling them for another. In other words, a cold- blooded tramaaction, ending at the counter or cashier’s desk. To the Greater Lansburgh & Bro. Store, the word “merchandising” has a far more comprehensive meaning. In this store, now nearing its Sixty-fifth Anniversary, the opera- tion of handling merchandise is not and can- not possibly be completed until the goods have been securely and neatly wrapped, packed or boxed and courteous delivery made to a completely satisfied customer. OQur Delivery System is as near perfect as it is humanly possible to make it. We have spent years and years in study, research and investigation to make it s6, and we spare no energy or expense to ‘keep it so. No sale is regarded as complete until the package has been delivered to the purchaser at the precise place and moment he or sheordersitdelivered Our Delivery System wraps, boxes or packs all goods for our Mail Order Department. Telephone Order Department. Shipping Department. City Delivery Department. For 20 years the Mail Order Department in our store has served the public with consum- mate satisfaction. It is conducted by Jane Stuart (and assistants), the personal shop- per for thousands of Mail Order patrons. Upon receiving a letter from an out- of-town patron, she selects the garments, goods or other merchandise they ask her to buy, and she is just as shrewd in her quest for good values and satisfactory merchandise as the person who wrote the letter would be. At all times during the day Jane Stuart is passing through the various departments se- lecting samples or making purchases for per- sons in all walks of life in many parts of the country. By reason of her long experience and correspondence acquaintance with these persons, she has come to know their indi- vidual preferences and tastes and has a filing cabinet filled with letters of thanks, appreci- ation and compliments on her faculty of selecting “exactly what I wanted at the price I wanted to pay.” The merchandise purchased by Jane Stuart is sent to our Delivery Department, there to be neatly, attractively and securely packed, weighed, stamped and promptly sent out for shipment by parcel post, express or freight, according to its size and weight. Our Delivery Departrflem is in a room 60x200 feet, making a total of 12,000 square feet devoted to this part of our business. Goods intended for shipment are conveyed to this department by chutes and conveyers and are packed and ready to leave the store within a short time after the purchase is made. Our Telephone Order Department does “a land office business,” because it simplifies shopping to read our advertisements in the daily papers, take the telephone off the hook at your-home or place of business and get into immediate communication with the de- sired department and give the order for mer- chandise. Although the Greater Lansburgh & Bro. Store’s telephone number is listed as FRANKLIN 7400, as a matter of fact we have TWENTY-SIX OTHER TRUNK LINES leading from Central to our store, and 146 telephone branches located in the various departments. This makes it possible for a telephone patron to get instantaneous service and a few minutes after the order has been given over the wire, the goods have been selected, the slip made out, and the bundle wrapped and ready for a delivery truck. We have a fleet of 15 fast and attractive White Dglivery Trucks for making delivery in Washington and its suburbs within a radius of 25 miles of the National Capital. Each of these trucks is operated by a uni- formed, careful and responsible driver, who has a courteous and alert helper. In the city proper we have two deliveries every day, the ¥irst at 9 o’clock in the morn- ing and the second at 2 o'clock in the after- noon. In the event of some special urgency, we make delivery by special messenger in any part of the city. Delivery once every day is made to sub- urbs within 15 miles of Washington. This means to places such as Alexandria, Rock- vilie, Ballston, Cherrydale, Hyattsville, Be- thesda, Seat Pleasant, etc. Twice each week we deliver goods in Vir- ginia as far as Vienna and Fairfax, and three times a week we deliver goods in Maryland as far as Laurel, Gaithersburg and Washing- ton Grove. OQur delivery days in distant Virginia terri- tory are Wednesday and Friday, while Tues- day, Thursday and Saturday are the days for delivery in distant Maryland. - Besides handling from 2,000 to 5,000 pack- ages of goods in our Delivery Department, purchased in our own store daily, we maintain a Service Department on the main floor of our . store for the accommodation of patrons who also make purchases in other stores. If you have had experience with our De- livery System and found the least fault with it, we shall regard ourselves under obligation to you if you will tell us about it. Some one has said, “Our friends are those who tell us the truth.,” We want your friendship. _JThis is the second of a series of articles written to acquaint the public with the features, facilities and resources of the Greater Lansburgh & Bro.
