BY ROBERT T. SMALL. The death of William Jennings Bryan will have no effect upon the appeal plans in the case of young| John T. Scopes of Daytom, convicted’ for violation of Tennessee's anti-evo- lution act. Mr. Bryan's untimely taking off may rob the further pro- ceedings in the case of some of their national interest, but it was mnever intended that he should be active for the State in upholding the conviction in the higher courts. As a matter of fact, there is very serious doubt if Clarence Darrow, Dudley Field Malone and Garfield Hays will appear further in the case for the defense. Their appearance at Dayton was due entirely fo Mr. Bryan. It was only when announce: ment came that the Commoner was to volunteer for the prosecution that Darrow and the others wired their willingness to take part in the de- fense. This was the reply of the Washington’s Greatest If there ever was a time when Furniture Store the credit that we’ll gladly ex- tend was of especial value, it is now, during this great August Furniture Sale. Just how voun Mr. Scopes, the complacent “goat” in the entire proceedings, will feel about all this remains to be seen. The Tennes. see case is about to revert to the Ten nesseeans and they will have to fight it out along their own lines.
