DAREDEVILS OF AIR | [_-ooropevi 7| | PLAN CIRCUS HERE Spec!aouiar Feats Promised at Benefit for Soldiers, Sail- ors and Marines’ Club. Thrilling acrobatic feats in the alr of & type seen here only in the movies will feature a combined military and civilian air circus to be held at Bol- lng Field the afternoon of Sunday, August 2, for the benefit of the Sol- diers, Sallors and Marines’ Club of Washington, it was announced today. The exhibition, heralded as the most pretentious demonstration of aerial “daredeviltry” ever staged in the East, will be under auspices of Brig. Qen. Samuel D. Rockenbach, com- manding the district of Washington, and will be in charge of Maj. Millard F., Harmon, acting commander of Bolling Fleld. Upside-Down Flying. The stunts, ranging from ‘“‘wing- walking,” plane-to-plane jumping and balancing atop a ship in the act of looping the loop, to a startling bitlor of upside’down flying, wi pertormed by group of ex \enk‘e‘ men composing Gate’s Flying Circus, | a Callfornia organization of aerlal | acrobats engaged for the occasion by the Army Air Service. ng the “daredevils” will squadrons of Armv, Navy and Marine fyers from Boliing Field, the Naval Alr Station here, the Quantico ring fleld, and probably from Lans- Field, Hampton Roads, Va; Mitchel Field, Long Island, and other points. All of the stunts will be staged close to the ground, in full view of the spectators at the field. Just be- fore each major event is scheduled a heavy smoke screen will be laid en- . Some of the most thr will take place while the planes swoop within 8 feet of the earth, it is stated The stunt fivers inlude the follow- ing well kno movie performers: Aaron F. Krantz, allas “Diavolo,” re- puted to be the most reckless aerial acrobat of the day; ‘‘Upsidedown” Pangborn, said to have flown a plane upside down for great distances than any other pilot Big Jac Ashcraft, “Loop King” Eddie Brooks, “Fearless Freddfe' Lund, “Wild Bill” Wonderlich and other noted exhibition fiyers. Stands on Looping Plane. Krantz {s the featured member of the group. He will balance himself on the outer tip of the upper wing of a plane at Bolling Field and as a second ship approaches overhead will grab for & dangling rope ladder and climb to the passing plane above. A number of men who have tried the same stunt in recent years have missed their grip and plunged to their death. “Diavolo,” who is but 26 years old and unmarried, is confl- dent he won't miss. | Another of Krantz's acts here wil\ be to stand erect without support of any pature on top of a plane while its pilot starts looping the Joop. Krantz is enabled to stick by the centrifugal action crea the plane does an “inside loop,” much | as water remains in a bucket when | swung over one's head. It takes re-| markable skill and nerve, however, to | maintain balance as the ship hurtles around at more than 100 miles an “Dare-Devil” Flyer AARON F. Pangborn is credited with being the | only pilot ever to fly his machine for |any length of time with a stationary | motor. He has flown & distance of two miles upside down, it is sald. Plans Daring Drop. ‘While getting “warmed up” for the big show Krantz will stand on his head atop the wing of a plane in flight, will stand erect on the rear controls, will stand on the lower wing while the piolt does a “barrel roll” and will hang by his toes from the edges of the wing and landing gear. He also will do a “bullet parachute falling several hundred feet space before opening his “The show will begin promptly at 2:30 pm. An admission charge of 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for chil. dren will be made, the proveeds to go toward the benefit fund of the Sol- diers, S and Marines' Club, Parking space for automobiles will he free. MPSCOTT, Mass., July 24 Representative J. Will Taylor of Tennessee, Republican national com- mitteeman from that State and one of the party leaders in the South, and R. R. Church, a colored leader of Memphis, were in conference with the President at White Court for nearly an hour yesterday afternoon. They sald afterward that they saw the President about some Tennessoe patronage and incidentally talked %olmcl and a variety of subjects. 'hese Tennessee leaders declared President Coolidge is stronger today with the rank and file of the country than ever, that support of his policies will be the issue in the congressional elections in 1926; that if he cares to run again in 1928 he can be re-elected without difficulty, and that at pres- ent he would carry Tennessee against any Democrat. Mr. Taylor, although he made such optimistic predictions regarding 1928, ‘would not say that he favored & third term for Mr. Coolidge. Mr. Coolidge has just gone over a tentative administration legislative program with Senator.
