ROBBERS GET LOOT FROM TWO STORES Showcase and Safe Are Plundered, But Richest Haul Is Overlooked. Burglars, their hands carefully xloved to prevent the leaving of Anger prints, who have been making a specialty of robbing business houses in this city the past few days, broke open show cases and a safe at 611 Twelfth street late last night or early this morning. Showcases in Brewood's, engraver and stationer, on the first floor, and the safe in the bookbinding establish- ment of Simonds & Rowzee on the second floor, were h d by the burglars, but not a single print left to assist the police in their investiga- tion of the affair. It was some time after midnight when it became kuown that the front door of the Brewood establishment had been “‘jimmied” d the place robbed of gold and er mounted pens valued at $250 or $300, and about 200 pennies taken from the cash vegister. Moved vo Second Floor. Mr. Brewood and detectives were there conducting an investigation, but it was not until G A. Simonds, member of the fir »kbinders, reached his place s that it was learned (! iders had bheen on tk In ddd\ll(ih r being ‘jimmied,” nation of the premires uhl‘m&ol that intruders had climbed a ra fastened to the rear of and smashed a second-stor: to gain access 1o the bo establishmeni. Gold leaf and se- curities in the safe upparently were the intruders. The not disturbed, ®nd business was not interfered with Overlooked Rich Haul. Tn the Brewood establishment the burglars overlooked hundreds of dol lars’ worth of gold and silver mounted pens, suggesting the probability of their having been frightened from the premises before concluding their work. Mr. Brewood explained that a time clock used for the guldance of employes on the third floor strikes the hour of midnight, and he believes the noise alarmed the burglars and fright- ened them from the building. ‘Had they not been frightened from the premises it is believed they would have attacked the Brewood safe, that was in a small room in rear of the store. It is a substantial safe, Mr. Brewood stated, but probably not in a securs place. Inspector Grant, chief of detectives, this morning mentioned to members of his command that safe-rippers are at work, and gave instructions to make every effort to arrest them. Loot obtained by the burglars has not amounted to very much, but much damage has resulted from thelr efforts. SCOTT FOILS ROPE AGAIN WHEN SANITY PROBE IS ORDERED (Continued from First Page) was not present or represented at the gourt session and apparently did not know of it. George R. Gorman, his assistant, who prosecuted Scott, when informed of the action, said: “I have not a thing to say except that they tried to fool the governor a week ago and now they are trying to make a fool out of Judge David ‘We will fight it to the end. This man deserves the rope and he will get it before we are through.” One of the reasons assigned by At- torney Stewart for believing Scott in- sane was his refusal last night to broadcast by radio an appeal to his brother Robert Scott, indicted with him, but never apprehended, to sur- render and save him from the rallows. A microphone had been placed in Scott’s cell but he refused to utilize it. Mrs. Scott, driving madly toward Chicago after once having become lost, was met by reporters at the out- skirts of the city and informed of the court action. “Thank God!” she murmured, and ‘was whisked on into town Scott, it developed today, issued a last-minute statement last night to a vdnmg the note said THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. €., FRIDAY, SAVED AGAIN FROM GALLOWS ELL SCOTT RUSS A writ of habeas corpus halted the hanging of Scott early this morning. | e newspaper reafirming his innocence and stating that his hanging “will be the greatest crime committed in the name of the law by the State of Illi- Explaining his wish to spend his st few hours alone, as he insisted on ‘I need these last few hours to try and remove the bitterness and anger from my heart against those who are deliberately responsible for this awful injustice. The attorneys, however, gave it no credence. ‘Whole Country Interested. Scott’s case within the last few months has risen to dramatic heights that have used the interest of the entire country, although in the be ginning no special interest was mani- fested in his fate. On April 2, 1924, Joseph Maurer, a 19.year-old drug clerk, was shot to death in the hold-up of a drug store only a block from the city hall. The next day Russell Scott was arrested for murder, later he, with his brother Robert, was indicted. Scott, 30 years old, and at one time promoter of a $30,000,000 bridge to connect Detroft and Windsor, Ontario, and later author of books on busi: ness ethics, actor, bootlegger and rob- be t pleaded guilty on the ad- vice of a young attorney assigned to defend him. When the court indicated that the death penalty would be pronounced, Scott and his attorney burst into tears and asked to be allowed to withdraw the plea. Small granted a 90-day reprieve pending efforts to lo- cate Robert Scott and to try to un- earth new evidence to substantiate Scott's story. Up to this time no great interest had been manifest in his predicament. When the reprieve was granted, however, friends and associates of Scott in Windsor, Ontario, scene of his financial operations, interested them- selves in his behalf and started rais- ing a defense fund. As the date for his execution a week ago drew near his father and wife, who had been working unremittingly for months to save his life, interested Detroit clubwomen in his case and during the last few days appeals have gone not only to Gov. Small but to President Coolidge and to other per- sons of influence who were belleved capable of aiding Scott. A week ago, on the eve of his exe- cution, Gov. Small granted a week's reprieve upon receipt of a telegram from Detroit signed Robert Scott and stating that he, and not Russell, did the shooting, and was coming to sur- ler. This telegram was proven a hobx, as was a message to the gover- nor a few days later from a Detroit telegraph operator, who said he was in the drug store and that Robert, and not Russell, did the shooting. Appeal Is Fruitless. What had been considered the final effort to save hig life was made yes- terday afternoon when his attorneys and his wife went to Springfleld in their fruitless appeal to Gov. Small and to the pardon board. During the night tips as to the whereabouts of Robert Scott or state- ments attributed to him, all designed to ald the condemned man escape the gallows, were received from various parts of the country. Before the execution the subject of the sketch broke jail and went to the house of the governor, played by J. Marcus Keyes, the night before he was to be hanged to plead for clemency. In the play, the governor, moaved by the plea, granted the pardon. After his vaudeville career Scott went into business and at 26 was head of a financial eales corporation with offices in Toronto. The concern was rated as a paying proposition, although conservative Canadian busi- ness men called it a “bubble.” As late as 1928 Scott was rated as a millionaire. The break came when Miss Dorothy Newburg of Boston sued Scott for $50,000, alleging breach of promise and seduction. Already married, Scott fled from Canada and the cor- poration failed. Miss Newburg won Judgment for damages against Sco and Scott's prosecutors have main- tained throughout the attempts to save him that the finding of his brother will have no effect on Scott’ fate, but will prc the gallows instead of one. “Find Robert Scott,” they have told Russell's friends, “and we will hang them both. Under the Illinols law they are both equally guilty, regard- lesg of who fired the actual shots.” In the dramatic incidents of his two escapes from the gallows, Scott en- acted in real life a role he played 10 Vears ago as a vaudeville actor.
