FINANCIAL. CHICKENS CHEAPER INLOGAL MARKET Heavy Receipts Are Big Help to Buyers—Prices or Beef Unchanged. A reduction in poultry prices ie interesting feature of the day's market, and dealers think still lower prices will prevail in the near future. Heavy receipts are said to be respon- sibie. NEW YORK, July 24.—A reaction- ary tendency developed in the cotton market early today after its big ad- vance yesterday. Prices fell off 17 to 29 points at the opening, with an extreme decline later of 33 to 36 points. Liverpool cables were espe- clally weak, partly due to the indus- trial disturbances in England and to private cables stating that the bureau report was discredited there. Both Liverpool and the continent were early sellers in the local market. There also was selling pressure from the South and in the way of hedges. Little change occurred in the weather news, Texas still being dry and ap- parently going backward from a lack of rain. Increased activity was reported generally from the cotton goods market with sales of 75,000 pieces at Fall River. At its lowest point in the first hour October touched 24.55 and December 24.74, followed by later raliles of about 25 points on covering. C, 24.35 1924, | EVERYMAN’S INVESTMENTS BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Don’t Forget the Savings Bank. In the unprecedented increase of interest in stocks and bonds the small investor should not lose sight of the place still filled, as no other institu- tion can flll it, by the savings bank. Moneys intrusted to the care of the savings bank are always available. Deposits in the savings bank do not fluctuate in market price as do even the best of bonds, including Libertys, to_say nothing of stocks. For the man whose opportunity for saving is limited, the savings bank is still the best resort. The interest re- turn is low, but it is sure. It takes self-control to set aside regularly small sums, and there is no compulsion about adding to your savings bank balance. In this respect the com- pulsory feature afforded by life in- surance and by the building and loan is a help to those who have not ac- quired the savings habit; but, on the other hand, there is never any ques- tion when you want to draw upon your savings account. The savings banks of the United States have an enviable record for safety. That some people at least ap- preciate their opportunities {s demon- strated by the statistics, which reveal that savings deposits in the banks reporting to the Federal Reserve Board and distributed throughout the country show steady and progressive increases. On June 1, 1924, deposits in.these banks for savings accounts totaled $7,311,316,000, and on June 1 1925, the amount had grown to $7.- 829,130,000. All this happened while securities were being bought by in- dividual investors in the largest amounts on record.
