By the Associated Pres CARDIFF, Wales, June 29.—In a contest between the Bible and science, the Bfble must win, and it must re- main unchanged as the divine Word, speakers maintained at today's meet- ing of the Alliance of Presbyterian Churches. The Rev. Clarence E. N. of Philadelphia said: “The liberal Protestant churches are slowly losing their faith in the Scriptires, and, as they lose their faith in the Scriptures, they are slowly losing thelr religion.” He maintained that the Protestant churches came into existence as a sublime witness to the Bible as the only rule of faith and practice, “but that now some of those churches are departing from the Reformation. A new critical school of Presbyterian churches in Great Britain,” he con tinued, “has discredited the Bible, in- stead of solving the difficulties be tween the Bible and science.” He said the most dangerous attack on the Bible is made by those within the churches who claim that only by ‘“reinterpretations” can there be mediation between the Bible and the modern mind. This attack he described as a “ter- rible monster which now threatens to destroy Christianity after it has sur- vived "the shocks and storms of the ages.” Dr-MacArtney insisted that the new thought “gets rid of the difficulties in the Bible by getting rid of the Bible and “makes human reason, not the word of God, the final authority. Thus the world is plunged back into the abyss of human ignorance and despair, where we can hear only the taunting, mocking echoes of our own cries in the darkness.” He appealed for a continuance of belief in the divine origin of the Bible, sald the changing attitude of some Protestant churches is the most sig- nificant thing in religious thought since the Reformation and declared that the Protestant churches in the United States have not gone so far in the “new thought,” as have some of the English churches. It was indicated that the delegates were strongly opposed to the ‘“dis- crediting of the Bible by any revela- tion of sclence.” The majority of the members of the council of the alliance agreed to an expression to the effect that “the Bible should be a funda- mental doctrine, not to be changed by progressive thought along other lines.
