May 28.—The state- ment of earnings and expenses of the EBaltimore & Ohio Railroad for April and the four months ended April 30, just issued, shows that the system, in common with all carriers handling soft coal in quantity, is still feeling the effects of the depression in that industry. 5 Tn April railway operating revenues slumped $340,618, compared with the corresponding month a year ago. Operating expenses, however, were reduced to the extent of $322,301. the result being a drop of only $18317 in net revenue from railway operation: For the four-month period railway operating revenues showeed a com- parative loss of $2,983, Expenses, on the other hand, were cut $3 951, the result being an increase of in net revenue from railway ion: BAGK AND REGULAR DIVIDENDS DECLARED NEW YORK, May 28 (A).—A back dividend of 1 per cent has been de- clared on the preferred stock of In terstate Iron and Steel payable July 15 to holders of record July 6. NEW YORK, May 28.—Speculative obligations attracted the most atten- tion in bond trading today, investment buying slowing up, although prices showed no signs of weakening. In the Government bond list, Treas- ury 418 equaled the high of the year and Liberty bonds generally sold around the close of the day before. Some Strong Issues. In the speculative list there was a run-up between 3 and 4 points in American Writing Paper 6s, anticl- pating favorable reorganization. Vir- ginia-Carolina Chemical 7s were also higher today. On the other hand, In- ternational -Mercantile Marine 6s made u new low for the year today, in anticipation of a poor annual report. Brisk buying of International Paper 6s was a feature, apparently on in- vestment accumulation. Traction Issues Rally. Among the tractions Interborough issues rallied sharply from yesterday's decline. Third Avenue adjustments were up nearly a point. Brookly: Maunhattan Transit 6s presented their usual strong front. St. Leouls-San Francisco income s were the leaders of the speculative rails selling up to a new high record. Norfolk-South- ern refunding 5s- were higher, but Chicago, Terre Haute and South- eastern incomes reacted. Brazil Eights Active. Brazil $s were the leader in the for- eign list, probably on the assumption that they have not participated in the improvement of South American bonds. Montevideo 7s dropped back a point. There was no important change in French bonds, which have proved in- different to the weakness in franc ex- change. Some comment was occa- sioned by the fact that Czechoslovak 8s have fafled to keep pace with advances in other European bonds, the price to- day being only a little over a point above the low of the year. The new $23,000.000 40-year King- dom of Norway loan expected to be offered next week will bear 5% per cent interest and sell to yleld well under 6 per cent. The proceeds are to be used in part to retire Norway Ss of 1940, which are callable on October 1, next, at 110. ROAD IMPROVES INCOME. BALTIMORE, May 28 (Special).— Operating revenues of the Maryland and Pennsylvania Rallroad Co. for April totaled $84,045, an increase of $3.211, as compared with the cor- responding month of last year. Members of the Association of Au tomatic Train Control Corporations of America are taking steps toward co operating in the installation of auto- matic train control on more than 80 railroads of the United States, follow ing the decision of a United States District Court handed down last Tues day. The decision sustained Congress and the Interstate Commerce Commis. sion in its right to compel raliroads to install train stops or control, but ex tended the date for imposing the pen. alty for neglect until July 18, 19 Officials of concerns maufacturing control devices said the court’s ruling upholds not only the power of the commission, but indicates conclusively the court’s belief that train control devices have passed the experimental stage.
