NEW YORK, May 26.—While trad- ing in the general list went on quietly today, there was animated buying in selected issues, low-priced rails, cer- tain industrials and certain foreign obligations, principally South Amer- fcan. 4 Bolivia 8s made a new high record for the past two years, selling up to 99, compared with 943, Monday's close. Montevideo 7s made/ a new top for this year. There wgs no spe- cial news_ affecting either of these bonds. It was simply a case where the advance elsewhere had made these high yields seem out of line. On the other hand, Argentine 6s reacted from their high of the day before on the announcement that 4 new Argentine loan of $45,000,000 is about to be of- fered. KEuropean bonds were little changed. Raiiroad Liens Mixed. In the domestic railway list Mis- souri Pacific general 4s responded, to the good showing of the April e ings statement with a new high for the year. St:Louis and San Francisco bonds were steady, but Chicago Great Western 4s reacted. Paper bonds were in demand, especially Union Bag and Paper 6s and International Paper 5s, the movement being connected in both cases with the strength in paper stocks. There was some discussion of the possibility of Union Bag and Paper 63 being called at 105, because of the lien the bonds have on the majority of the stock of the St. Maurice Paper Co. Rubber Fives Strong. United States Rubber 5s were strong and Virginia-Carolina Chemical 7s held the ground recently gained. Chicago Railway 6s were the weak members of the traction group and Third Avenue adjustments the strong spot. Today's new offerings included $5,000,000 Price Brothers & Co. first 6s to yield 5.90 per cent. NORTHWESTERN VOTES - | CHICAGO. NEW YORK, May 26.—Coinci- dent with the reconvening of the French Parliament for a session which will be devoted largely to financial matters, the French franc has dropped back to near the vear's lowest level of 5.03% cents, Which was established early in March. The reaction in some quarters \has been considerad natural in' view of the probable necessity of increasing taxes to balance the French budget and of devising measures to fund war debts. PRICES GO HIGHER N GRAIN MARKET Permanent Frost Damage to Wheat Feared—Corn and Oats Quiet. By the Associated Press CHICAGO, May 26.—Although sell- ing to realize profits brought about early declines in price today for wheat, and for other grain as well, the wheat market later scored an ad- vance. General desire to take profits acted at first as more than a counter- balance for higher quotations on wheat at Liverpool. However, wheat here rallied sharply after reports were received that considerable permanent | damage to the Spring wheat crop in the Northwest had been done by the recent freeze up, and that very heavy losses are fmminent unless Northwest rains come soon. Chicago opening prices on wheat, varying from 1% decline to 1 advance, May, 1.72% and July, 1.61 to 1.62, were foilowed by a series of downturns and reactions, with the market going as low as 1.69% for May and 1.60 for July, but then rising to 1.72% May, and 1.63% July. Further frost expected tonight made corn and oats relatively stable as compared with wheat. ' Directors of the North America Co. have declared the regular quarie:+ 1y dividend of 214 per cent in common stock on the common outstanding and 75 cents a share on the preferred, both payable July 1 to stock of record June 5. In announcing their action, direc tors called attention to a change in policy of payments on the common issue, resulting in an increased pav- ment to holders who elect to accept cash in lieu of stock. The custom of declaring the com- mon dividends at the rate of 23 per cent quarterly, payable at the rate of 1-40 share of common or in cash is maintained, but provision {s made to distribute cash at the rate of the market value on the date of pay ment instead of the fixed rate of §5 cents a share. At the current price for the common, those who elect to take cash instead of stock would re- ceive about $1.25 a share. The dis tribution will be made, however, at the market value of the dividend stock on July 1, when the dividend i3 payabl.e North American securities are wide- 1y held in this vicinity due mainly to their local aspect created by tha company’'s rather extensive holdinzs in local transportation systems. Bcouts Speculative Excesses. “Speculative excess in husiness is extremely unlikely,” according to Ray Vance, president of the Brookmire Economic Service, in a message toda to The Star. “Our consulting staff,” writes Vance, “has for the last two we been busy replying to those who con tend we are on the verge of business inflation, with commodity prices ex ceeding the 1920 top. Bishop Visits Baltimore. New interests named as being terested in an amalgamation incl Electric Ligh and Power Co. the Pennsylvania Water and Power Co. and the West ern Maryland Railway. George T. Bishop, head of the Cleveland interests, which dominate the short line, is in Baltimore today, and it was inferred at his office this morning a statement would be forth- coming later this afternoon.
