Texas Company Leads Oil. The overnight announcement that California Petroleum preferred was to be retired at 120 plus dividends had evidently not been di punted, al- though it was not all unexpected. The stock sold 123, as against 119 at T day close. On the other hand, the prospect of new com- mon stock being created in sufficient volume to take care of the pre- ferred had a depressing effect on the former. e feature amo: the oils was T Company, which ran up almost to 49, where it encountered a lot of profit taking from those who had bought high, months ago. Pacific Ofl was sold rather freely on the news that the dividend rate had been raised from $2 to $3. Pure Oil was active above 2§, and Sinclair at 22. Pan-American B, Phil Petroleum and Texas Pacific « and Oil came in for a good deal attention. National Distillers’ Pro ucts made a new high for the year. U. S. Industrial Alcohol sold above 90 for the first time. Consolidated Cigar sold at its high- est since 1922 on reports that the company was showing a profit of §8 a share. No dividends have been paid on the common since 1921, when a 1% per cent quarterly rate was dis- continued. Dividends of 7 per cent an- nually are being paid on the preferred. In 1921, when the common W il on the dividend list, the stock sold above 69. Motor Rumors Revived. There was a revival of discussion @bbut General Motors. Much was made of fts very strong cash position, its current earnings and the large volume of business being done. The street looks for an increase in the dividend. NEW YORK, May 22.—Although in- vestment bonds were still very strong, activity because of the lack of offerings and the speculative obliga- tions were the center of interest in today's trading. Among the leaders was Chicago Great Western 4s, which were taken in large volume at ad- vancing prices and at a new high for !the year. It has been reported that the Atchison was acquiring control of |the road, but of this there was no | confirmation. The yield at today’s rices was nearly 6.75 per cent. New ork, West Chester and Boston 41s were again favorites, reaching 70. St. Louls - San Francisco senfor issues were strong and the income bonds fractionally higher. The Chicago, Terre Haute and Southeastern in. comes also did better today. Liberty Loans Firm. A buying movement developed in bash 5s at new high figures, above Dealings were very heavy. This movement represented the search for yields out of line with the rest of the market, and 5% per cent is not ily obtainable on any reasonably high-grade railroad obligations. Lib- ertys were firm, but not much changed in price. Convertible oll bonds went along with their respective stocks, the leaders being Sinclair 6s and Skelly 63s. Unusual strength appeared in the Interborough list, the refunding 5s, both stamped and unstamped, running up from a point and a half to two points. Standard Gas and Electric 6%s were down over 2 points. American Beet Sugar 6s were the most active of the sugar bonds, large blocks being taken at par against the offering price in January of 96. New Offerings Today. In the foreign group the invest- ments were in demand, and one of the most active was City of Copenhagen 513s. CHICAGO, May 22—Wheat prices here showed an early upward tend- ency today influenced by unexpected firmness of quotations at Liverpool and by word that demand there for wheat to be delivered at once had | improved. Rains in the North- west were reported, but were more or less offset by hot weather south west, likely to bring about damage by Hessian fly.
