AVIATION INTEREST GROWING STRONGER New Cites Increased Demand for Air Mail Routes—More Lines in Prospect. By the Ascociated Press. Americans generally are more in terested in aviation now than ever before, even than during the war, in the opinion of Postmaster General New, who declares he belleves com- mercfal aviation is on the eve of im- yortant developments. The Post Of fice Department, under his direction, has blazed the way with day and night flying on its transcontinental air malil route and within a few weeks will put in operation an overnight air mail service between New York and Chicago. Negotiations are being con- ducted with the Cuban government, with every indication of success, for re-establishment of the air mail be- tween Key West and Havana. Pro- posals have been made for_ establish- ment of a service between Key West and Colombia by way of Cuba, Guate- mala and the Panama Canal Zone. Extensions of the demestic air mail service are in prospect. Mail Service in Demand. The deep interest in aviation shown by Americans is indicated by the re- Guests from many cities for air mail service and by the prospective par- ticipation of financlers in commercial aviation services. Under the recent Jaw the Postmaster General is author- ized to enter into contracts for carry. sng the mail by air, but will do &0 only where it can be shown there is an actual need and that such service will be successful. Postmasters must petition for the service, showing the yroposed schedules, facts bearing on the necessity for such route and esti- mates of the probable traffic. Con- ctors may be paid four-fifths of the sir mail postage for carrying the mail. The Government, through the Post Office Department, is prepared to aid commercial aviation only to that ex- tent. The Postmaster General be- jleves the Government should not take up aviation for carrying the malls exclusively, but should contract for air mail service in the same man- ner as it contracts with the railroads for mall carriage. Would Need Appropriations. The proposed service to South America is being promoted by a con- cern now operating in Colombia and which is endeavoring to form an American company to conduct the in- ternational service. Its tentative lans call for flying between Key West and Bogota by way of Havana, Guatemala and Panama. The Amer- fcan Post Office Department would favorably consider using the service providing it was operated by Amer- fcan capital and manned by American pilots, but would have to secure ap- propriations from Congress for the purpose. At present the Post Office Department is limited to $150,000 for the year for the foreign mail service by alrcraft. It contracts for a serv- ice between Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia, and is about to enter Into the Key West-Havana service. The carrying of passengers and express in addition to the malls §s eesental, in the opinion of postal officials, to the success of new air mail outes, PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH ENDS GOLDEN JUBILEE Elaborate Services Held by Con- gregation of Eastern Last Night.
