NEW YORK, Ma. —If Mary had a little lamb at present she would be in a pretty sound financial condition for a youngster. For the providing of lambs for the tables of American households has become u great and flourishing business, affecting the prosperity of wide districts. fornia and Colorado now are cleaning up the season’s production and within the next fortnight heavy shipments will commence to come from Ken- tucky, Tennessee and Virginia. ~The Colorado marketing consists of last vear's lambs, which have been in feed all Winter. Fancy Prices in Spring. Owing to the mildness of the climate, Californta_has first chance at the markets of the country. Shipments from that State, which have been running very heavy, have now begun to lag, indicating that the peak of the season is past Sheep growers dis- covered five years ago, when the wool industry was in the throes of depres- sion, that they could make up some of their lost revenues of wool by pping surplus early lambs East. ncy prices are obtainable in the Spring. The principal competitor of California for the early Spring trade is Colorado. It is estimated that about 4,000,000 sheep have been on feed in that State, but the larger part of the last year lambs now have sold and prices promise to remain steady until heavy shipments start from the Southeastern States. Wool Roosts Returns. ‘The reven from the lamb crop has been increased by the added de. mand for lambs wool. There is ap- proximately $18,000,000 invested in the industry in California and about 16,000,000 pounds of wool is produced. Consumption of lamb has followed al lines very closely. The North Atlantic cities are probably the largest buyers and San Francisco and TLos Angeles eat over a million and a half lambs yvearly. The lamb habit, however, has not made much progress in the cotton and corn belts of the South and Midwest. Fruit Growing Expands. In the West the big sheep flocks are being crowded out by the fruit and vegetable farms, although consider- able grazing still remains in the foot- hills and national forests. This is not checking the industry, as many of the animals from Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia are coming from farms where raising lambs has been taken up as a profitable side line. S S FRENCH TRADE DROPS IN FIRST QUARTER sey has been consolidated with the Southport Mills, cotton seed oil re- finers of this city, in a new corpora- tion capitalized at $13,500,000, and known as the Southern Cotton Oil Co. of Louislana. DETROIT, May Michigan potatoes for th son to date have been about 14,000 cars, or 3,000 less than for the corre- sponding period a vear ago. ATLANTA, May —The first Georgia bright leaf tobacco of the 1 crop was cured this week at Douglas. Sales will begin in several cities July 21. Recent rains have benefited the crop, and a yield of more than 50,000, 000 pounds for the State is indicated if the weather continues propitious. SPOKANE, May 22.—The Great Northern Rallroad has changed 40 lo- comotives in operation between Havre, Mont., and Spokane from ofl to coal burners, owing to the advance in the price of crude oil. $2,000,000 POWER MERGER IN MARYLAND Five Plants in Northern Part of State Get Permit to Unite Resources. Special Dispatch to the Star. BALTIMORE, May 22.—Merger of five electrc power companies in north- ern Maryland, comprising electric plants valued at nearly $2,000,000, has been authorized by the Public Service Commission. Under the new merger plan the Northern Maryland Power Co., a new corporation, acquires the capital stock and property of the Eikton Electric Co., Havre de Grace Electric Co., Northern Maryland Electric Co. and the Home Manufacturing Light and Power Co. The astern Power Co. of Delaware, which controls power sys- tems in Delawarc and Pennsvlvania, was authorized to secure control of the five combined companies. AMERICAN EXPRESS CO.
