OLCASETOAWAT * NEXT GRAND JURY Special Government Counsel . Decide on Delay Until Monday. Atlee Pomerene and Owen J. Rob. erts, special counsel for the C - WOMEN DESTROY PACIFIST TRACTS AT QUINQUENNIAL (Continued from First Page.) was_ astounded when she found some of the more radical pacifist literature in the hands of newspaper corre- spondents erday, and may have given a false impression when she asked to be given the pamphlets in {order to read just what they con- | tatned. “The one point on which any blame can be attached to the American or international officers,” said she, “is possibly that we did not have person- ected every one of the hun- THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, THURSDAY, MAY thoroughly within his legal rights un- der the laws of the United States. It would be absolutely unfair to brand the Senate as a pacifist organization because of this man’s attitude. On the other hand, there might be obyec- tion to his distributing private litera- ture on pacifism under a Government trank. The International Council, it was_explained, is in much the same position—any member of the organi- zation is free to advocate anything that does not transcend the law, but the entire council, with some of the most conservative of women on its roster, must pass upon it before it be- comes a policy of the organization. The tempest yesterday over invita- tions to the White House tea party, from which American women who had helped fimance the quinquennial were excluded because there were not enough cards, ended in complete peace this noon, when every one at- tending the convention was invited to shake hands with President and Mrs. Coolidge. The party yesterday was described by those who attended as the most delightful social function ever provided for the International Councll and forelgn delegates were loud in praise of the homelike atmos- phere provided by the White House. In Routine Session. The council met in routine session this morning with Lady Aberdeen, the international president, in the chair. Reports of the secretary and treasurer | were read after which it was voted to admit three delegates from the Inter- national Woman Suffrage Alliance. The 10 votes of South Africa were cast against this action. Mrs. Solly, proxy president of the South African delegation, refused to give any ex- planation for this vote. The delegates were officlally invited to @ pan-American night at the Pan- American Unfon Building tonight. In reading the invitation Mrs. Philip North Moore, president of the Ameri- can Council, said that South America was the future great organization field of the International Council. Mrs. Carrie Chapman Catt and Miss Bertha Lutz of Brazil will speak on the op- portunities on the Southern continent. American delegates united _this morning in a breakfast at the Hotel ‘Washington in honor of Miss Anne «Coushaine, the director of publicity and finance for the quinquennial. The quinquennial got actively under- way yesterday afternoon with its first open sessidn at which Lady Aberdeen spoke briefly on the ideals of the movement and on the accomp- lishments of the officers who had died since the last convention. The meeting last night was devoted to reports of the national councils comprising the international organi- zatlon. Mme. Elisa Carra, proxy president of the Italian council, made an appeal for support of the ideal of a “United States of Europe” as the best guarantee of peace.
