In a signed article which will appear in the Editorial Section of The Sunday - Star May 10th —this keen-visioned leader of France discusses the meaning to his country and to the world of the election to the German presidency of Marshal von Hindenburg. Dramatically, Herriot declares, “France wants security only”’—and then he proceeds to analyze critically the German mind and purpose as ex- pressed in Hindenburg’s victory at the polls. Herriot' says: ‘“Beyond doubt the reactionary forces of Germany have gained power. Will these elements be satisfied with the compliment to their vanity—or will they desire to go further?” Herriot asks: “Is Germany saying to herself she has decidedly had enough of war * * * or is she thinking she must first work on her economic reconstruction * * * in order to impose her will the day when she has regained her material force? Such is the tragic dilemma with which the entire world is faced.” Herriot declares: I believe that only on the day when Germany commits herself on the question of her admission to the League of Nations will we be able to judge the lmportance of the election of Marshal von Hindenburg.” The Herriot article flashes with the spirit of a man who has attempted much to bring order out of chaos—and sums up a problematic situation with a force born of conviction. No country is more concerned than France—and no Frenchman better able to review the effect of the recent election in Germany than ex-Premier Herriot.
