Robert Strawbridge Downs, years old, president of the National Capital Hotel Corporation and long prominently identified in business, fra ternal and club circles in Washington, died at his home, Twin Acres, Edge moor, Md., late Friday night after a! lingering illness. Mr. Downs was manager of the Washington Hotel un- til about a year ago, when he retired from active work due to failing health Mr. Downs was born in Baltimore, the son of late Rev. Wilford Downs and Mrs. Martha Cornelius Downs, and was educated in the public schools in his native city and Washington, fin ishing his education at Baltimore City College. His father was at one time pastor of Waugh M. E. Church in this city Iintering the hotel business in early youth, Mr. Downs spent several years in New Jersey and came to V n in Hotel Company at the time of the modeling of the old Palais Royal into the Raleigh Hotel, in 1893. He remained at the Raleigh Hotel until 1903, after which he managed the Stafford Hotel in Baltimore until 1913. He ma red the Shoreham Hotel from then until 1917¢ resigning to build the Washington Hotel and later remained in charge until resigning about a vear ago. Member of Many Groups. was a member of the Board of Trade, the Commerce, Merchants’ cturers’ Association, Co- lumbia Country Club, Kiwanis Club, Racquet Club, International Club, The Greeters, the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, and was long prominent in M being a member of La Fayette Lodge, No. 19, F.
