THE SEVEN SLEEPERS AeThrilling Novel of International Intrigue “ontinued from Yesterday's Star.) The shop contained cheap masks and dominoes for the revelers, and on reaching the interior I rapldly looked through a variety of cos- iumes. Eventually I chose an elabo- rate cardboard face, painted to rep- resent a red Indlan, with the ap- propriate headdress and a scarlet domino to match, and, having donned my disguise, 1 asked the old woman in charge of the shop if there was a- back ecntrance thereto, alleging that 1 wanted to play a joke on some friends who were waiting for me out- side “Bien. monaieur.” she said, will come this way.” She led me to the back of the shop and out through a side door, direct- ing me under an arch to the Rue de la Confederation. I thanked her and walked through the arch and along the street, deter- mined to make for the first bridge I saw and walk boldly across it trusting to my fancy dress to avoid recognition. I was within a few hundred yards of the Pont du Mont Blanc when I attracted the attention of three or four merrymakers, dressed in soiled finery. They intercepted me, com- mented vivaciously on my appear- ance, and, after dancing round me in & nolsy ring, they insisted on linking arms with me, and we pro- oceeded on our way, my companions chanting uncouth Swiss rhymes and 1 untunefully bellowing the ‘“Made- ' which, with the exception of Marseillaise,” was the only French song T kne 1 was not sorry to have met this merry band, since, be- ing in their company, my chances of slipping across the bridge unrecog- nized were greatly increased. 1 found that the crowd mostly con- Aned itself to the streets through which I had already passed, and that 1t thinned rapidly as we came within view of the lake On approaching the bridge I looked eagerly for any sign of a watcher, but at first saw nothing to give me any cause for alarm. T was soon to realize, however, that the resources of Fritz and his intel- ligence service were by no means to bhe despised. Halfway across the bridge stood a ragged member of the unemployed selling bunches of those amall pink carnations which seem to be perpetually in season in this part of Europe. As we came near him a nowerful green touring car drew up with a grinding of brakes, out of which stepped a man, apparently with the object of buying a posey. He picked up -and rejected several WBunches of flowers, talking rapidly to the flower-seller all the time he was doing se. Eventually he chose one, paid for it, and turned back toward the car. He glanced in my direction & moment, and I recognized him immediately. It was none other than Fritz himself. He climbed back into the car, which continued on its way across the bridge. We were now abreast of the flower- seller, whom I now knew to be primed and posted for my arrest, when it came into the head of one of my ynknown companions, who had evi- dently chosen to honor the occasion with coplous libations, to break into & dance. He executed a few ungainly steps in front of us, inslsting that we should pause to admire, while he fllustrated what he described as “Le vria pas d'apache.” Then, all at once, filled with some freakish spirit of mischief, he ran up to us, seized the hat of one of my companions, which he threw into the lake, while with his other hand he tore off my mask, just as the flower-seller thrust a taded bunch of carnations under my nose, asking me to buy. It would be difficult to say of us was the more disconcerted. suddenly had the flower-seller was for an instant antirely at a loss. He recognized me at once, but he obviously did know what to do. I turnegd abruptly, hoplug to met away recovered the use of his wits, and, abandoning my companions, T walked on, intent only on crossing the bridge and reaching the secretariat before he should have time to give the alarm and reise my pursuers. 1 had not gone 60 yards before I heard a sharp whistle behind me, and, looking back, saw that it came from the flower- seller, who was walking rapidly in pursuit. 1 ignored his signal and hastened across the bridge, past the Pension de T Reine, and then to the left into the Place des Alpes. There were no taxis in sight, but as I ran across the square, shedding my now useless disguise as T went, T suddenly saw a tram inscribed “Palais des Nations,” which is local hyperbole for the secretariat of the league. It was already moving off toward the Rue des Paquis and I jumped i Nothing could well be safer t interior of & municipal tram. regarded it as sent from heaven. took me the whole way to the secre- rariat, and 1 alighted opposite the main entrance, which is situated on the side remote from the lake. It is approached by a small courtyard bounded by an iron railing. At each corner of the railed court there are two gates, one for the entrance and the other for the exit of vehicles, and in the center is the gate for persons on foot, through which T passed. Just ss I started to walk across the court (the door Is about 10 yards from the gate) I saw a large green car heading from the right entrance to the court, presumably with the inten- tion of stopping opposite the door which 1 was seeking to enter. Its great headlights were full on and I was clear- Iv_defined in their glare. The next instant I heard a guttural exglamation, and the car, instead of slowing down on approaching the door, gathered speed and made straight for the opposite or left entrance to the court, & maneuver which, as I was crossing the court full in its path, en- tailed my immediate and sure destruc- tion. 1 gave a wild leap forward and fell head foremost through the door, which was opening to admit an elderly gen- tleman, whom I have since ascertained to be a delegate of the Kingdom of he Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, knock- ing him headlong, with myself on top of him, in a confusfon of silk hats, attache cases and blasphemy. “it you which So CHAPTER VIL I Become an Internatiomal Problem. We sorted ourselves out on the mat, and by that time the car had crossed the court and disappeared into the stroet. Two huissiers came forward, and the rufMed old gentleman with whom 1 had collided was pacified with a clothesbrush, while I knelt on the floor in eearch of his papers. Presently, still_grumbling, and grasping his dis- patch case tightly under the arm, he went up the steps, approached the con- cierge and thereafter disappeared from view, leaving his accompanying secre- taries to dust themselves and recover their equanimity at leisure. Meanwhile, two chauffeurs had ap- peared mysteriously from some hidden office in the basement, and were offer- ing professional comments on the car which had 80 narrowly falled to run me down. One considered the driver's con- duet “un peu trop fort,” while the other went so far as to style him “un imbe- cile au point de vue de la circulation.” I asked them whether they had noted the number of the car, but they re- pled in the negative. They had seen 1hat there were two men in the driver's seat, one in livery and the other tall, big and in plain clothes. I mounted the steps and walk- ed up to the desk of the con- reSecting that my friendy I been unmasked that | not | before he had ; i By FRANCIS BEEDING Copyright, 1925, by Littie, Brown & Co.) of the Rue Etienne Dumont were not leaving much to chance. If they were prepared to assassinate me in front of a large building and in fu]l view of several people, they were evidently men who would stick at nothing. I gave my name to the conclerg an Englishman, stout, broad, typically British, with our national readiness to be respectfully, but unaffectedly, amused by the spectacle of a number of foreign gentlemen brushing them- selves in a condition of high excite- ment. I asked to mee M. Lavelle of the political section. He sent my name up by the lift boy and requested me to waft until he had ascertained whether M. Lavells was disengaged. I spent a few moments in the hall, examining the place with interest. It was large, with two corridors running into it; backed by a long glass screen shutting off a huge com- mittee room. There was a lift, and I noticed that the shaft was in two portions, actommodating a passenger lft, in which the boy bearing my card had ascended, and, immedlately behind it, what I took to be a service 1ufe. The lift boy returned, after a lapse of some minutes, and Informed the conclerge that M. Lavelle would see me immediately. As I turned toward the lift, 1 heard the concierge dealing with a party of tourists, who, with a laudable desire to obtain as much in- formation as possible in the shortest space of time, had inquired whether the league was still in session. T noted with satisfaction that my countryman behind the desk was en- tirely equal to the occasion. No, gentlemen, he said. “But I can show you a room in which two wars were stopped. Lavelle's office waa at the end of a long corridor on the second floor. I knocked on the door and an instant later was vigorously welcomed by my old friend. He was just as I had remembered him, except that he was now out’of uniform, bright, alert, with a mobile, responsive French face, dark eyes and hair graying a little above his ears. “Come in, my dear Preston. £o it's really you. I'm more than delighted.” He gripped me by the arms, smiling and taking a long look at me. It was pleasant to receive so cordlal a reception after my experiences of the afternoon, and I breathed happily again, like a man released. I suppose the strain of the last two hours had told on me unperceived, for T syddenly felt a little faint. and Lavelle was now gazing at me in some concern. “Why, my dear chap, to_the world.” Lavelle, who spoke perfect In prided himself on his idiom. “Here,” he continued, “sit down at once.” He pulled up a chair, into which I thankfully subsided, and went to a cupboard by the window. I smiled as he produced a bottle of cognac and a glass. “Yes,” he said, as he poured me out a stiff double. “T've not quite for- gotten the old habits—though heaven knows how quickly one degenerates. Besides, dear friend, I need such aids to reflection, being in the habit of working here late at night. Valuation Should Be ‘Basis, Rather Than Baltimore. Special Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, April 7. — Another problem involving interstate regula- tion of the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company has heen pre- sented to the Public Service Commis- sfon by residents of Montgomery County near the District Line. Jn a letter to the commission Frank F. Loeffler, representing the citizens’ a sociation of Woodside and lver Spring, contends that the telephone service in Maryland near the Dis- trict of Columbla is an extension of the Washington telephone system, and as all the business is through the V shington exchange, their rates should be based on a valuation of the Washington comapny's equipment, in- stead of the higher Maryland rate. He stated that his committee is now preparing data to support the claims of villages near Washington for exemption from the increase in Maryland telephone rates. The data will be presented within a few days, he_wrote. The letter states Mr. Loeffler's un- derstanding that the Public Utilities Commission of the District of Colum- bia is about to reduce the rates of the Chesapeake and Potomac Tele- phone Company of Washington, D. C. For this reason, he contends, It is not “logieal or just” that subscribers of the Washington telephone system should be forced to Pay an increase in rates, based on the valuation of the property of the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company of Bal- timore, which is considerably higher than that of the Washington com- pany HEART FATALITIES LEAD. BALTIMORE, April 7. —Organic heart trouble was the cause of more deaths per 100 inhabitants of Mary- land during 1923 than any other disease, according to a report on the 20 principal causes of death pre- pared for the State Board of Health by Dr. F.
