There was a rather severe drop the mercurial Savage Arms, and the sugar stocks went down somewhat on the announcement of a further cut in the quotation of refined sugar. Mathieson Alkall’s Profits. Mathieson Alkali's first quarter earnings statement will be published in the last week of April 7. It will disclose larger profits than were re- ported for either the first three months of 1924 or the final quarter of last year. The second quarter's operations are expected to show im- provement even over the last three months. Sentiment toward the market for rcfined sugar is distinctly bullish Whereas 1924 began with the quo- tation on Cuban raws around 4 cents, and this was 6 cents, only to drop to 2, the trend this year has been healthier. The market has become more stable and the probability is that prices will work higher. MARKET CLOSES STEADY. Short Covering Helps Prices in Last Hour Deals. Associnted Press. NEW YORK, April 7.—Lower gaso- line and refined sugar prices, com- bined with the circulation of rumors questioning the safety of the Chi- cago and Northwestern dividend, brought about a renewal of selling pressure in todav's market. Many popular issues, in which the short interest has been materially reduced by the recent advance, fell back 1 to 4 points, but most of them made good recovery from their lows of the day. Total sales approximated 1,200,000 shares. The closing was_ste Leading regarding | T ouy | Asso Ol (1%). .. move | in | Armour I11 A(2). Arn Cons & Co Asso Dry G (5) Asso D G 1st (6). AtT&SFe (7). HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. . NEW YORK, April 7.—Higher prices were the rule in the bond mar- ket today. Exceptions were due to special causes. The better feeling was evident more in middle and sec- ond grade than in the go-called legal bonds, although the latter were all firm. A notable case of strengtth was seen in Pennsylvania general 53, of 1968, which sold within a fraction of thé high of the year. Two Special Features. ' | In. the speculative issues there were two - features. .One, the strength in the Seaboard group and the other the weakness In the Chiy cago Rallways 5s. Selling of the last named, which at one time carried the price down to 79, against the high of the year of 88, was due to doubt about the result of today's eleetion in Chicago. For the uniform strength in Seaboard obligations the only explanation was, tha consistent progress the company has been making. Animated buying of Seaboard 6s, and of Seaboard refunding 4s brought about substantial gains. Activity was most pronounced in the 6s, but the advance was largest in the 4s. St. Louis-San Francisco adjustment 68 were fractionally higher and a small gain was made in Interna- tional Great Northern adjustments. Chicago Great Western 4s were up a half point. 5 Other Advances Noted, Investment buying brought about an advance in North American 6%s within a half-point of the high of the year. South Porto Rico 7s also were bought at new high prices. Hudson and Manhattan refunding 5s was another bond to find new favcr with investors. At today's high the vield 1s well over 5.75 per cent. All the Wilson & Co. issues were higher followi the formal announcement of the re organization plan. Forelgn bonds were firm, issues rallying with the rest. Bei- glan 7%s improved moderately. To- day's new eofferings included $2.- 500,000 Pennsylvania Electric three- year 5 per cent debentures to yield over 6.50 per cent iriEmeC o RUSSIA SEEKS LOAN. French ‘Brililh Banks Consider Basis for Raising Funds. LONDON, April 7.—Representatives of Russian and British banks, the Daily Mail says today, are confer- ring, with knowledge of the British treasury, in an effort to ascertain a basis on which Russia would be able to raise a loan in London. The Russians are understood to have been notified that English financial circles would not consider any proposal for a loan until Russia gives an under- standing that she will recognize liability to repay the debts owing her. The Mail believes that government is genuinely anxious to see Russia back again in the world's markets. but desires first to see what advantage is taken from the fact that the door already is open for trading before entering into fresh agreement: the British NEW YORK DAIRY PRICES. Corf and oats were firmer, sympa- thizing with wheat. Cash business in corn was said to have enlarged. After opening at 1 to 21 cents higher, M 1.01% to 1.02, the corn market eased back a little.
