Prospect of ironing out the humps and hollows in suburban highways within a reasonable time became brighter today, when it developed tnat there is an additional $6,000 avallable for such repair work Two weeks ago L. R. Grabill, perintendent of suburban roads, nounced that he had only §40,000 with which to maintain the outlying thor- oughfares from now until July 1 when the new appropriation of $297, 500 becomes available. | He has just received, however, a| credit ‘of 36,000 to his balance for | snow removal service rendered by his | division during the storms of Janu- ary. | Distributed by Weeks. Distributing this added amount over the remaining 14 weeks of the| fiscal year will mean-that Mr. Grabill | can spend about §450 more per week | than he could have expended other- wise. Four steam rollers have been put| into operation with the suburban | road gangs within the past fow days, | Mr. Grabill said, and is expected to| make the repalr work more effective. With a steam roller, the superin-| tendent explained, a repair gang can| make larger patches than are made | without a rolfer. i A week ago Engineer Commissioner | Bell requested the highway officials to consider the advisability of using some of the money for repair to streets in speeding up repairs to subuchan reads, Fallowing that sug- gestion, C. B. Hunt, engineer of high- conferred with Mr. Grabill, who | uded that at that time he was | not justified in applying for some of the street repair money. Expects Rapid Progress. Engineer Hunt stated then that he might change his mind later in the Spring if the suburban road situation should become worse. With the $6,000 | | that has just been refunded to Mr. | | Grabill, Mr. Hunt does not deem it | | necessary at this time to make any reet yrepair money available for | suburban road work. | Mr. Grabill said that within the next month he expected to make consi !alrlv progress in patching AUTO | DRIVER HELD " IN ACCIDENT CASE His Son Gravely Ill, T.
