EW YORK, March 20—Track N experts say that the fre- quency with which startling feats on the board track have suc- ceeded one another this Winter may be explained only on mental grounds. The American sports public this Winter has witnessed, they say, a demonstration of the power of psychology as related to athletic en- deavors that is nothing short of miraculous. When the late Mike Murphy stood in that dimly lighted dressing room at Franklin Field some years ako and said, “If you won't be Beat you can't be beat,” he coined a phrase that has ‘lived, not because of its ple- turesqueness, but because of its truth. Inaugurates New Era. It inaugurated a new era in Ameriy can amateur sports, Inasmuch as it opened the eves of every one to the mental side of athletics, which there- upon assumes an importance no less than the physical side. Coaches and trainers came to rec- ognize that unless they could fire the souls and develop the will of their men their efforts would fail of high achievemert, no matter how well qualified they might be tech- nically. But it -was not untll the stirring events of the current indoor season began that track enthusiasts realized t.e full scope of the possibilities of mind over matter For years American athletes had been going along in the belief that the ultimate, or very nearly the ulti- m {n the matter of speed had been reached. Jole Ray's time for the in- door mile was regarded as a hope- less mark to shoot at, and even Ray was possessed of the idea that he had given his best. Then Nurmi came. His achieve- ments primarily had the effect of convincing American athletes that records that had existed before he arrived in this country were by no means the highest standard of human accomplishment ; Y @ 77/ OMORROW morning at 8 o’clock TAUBMAN'’S ushers in a new era of bigger, better service for every Washington motorist. NEW YORK, March ~ 20.—Sport writers belleve that Willie Ritola, dark- skinned rival of the great Paavo Nurmi, missed one of the best opportunitles for glory ever given to a track athlete in the 5,000-meter race Tuesday, dur- ing which illness took Nurmi from the floor. Had Ritola left the track, declining to accept victory with Nurmi out, & wan- derful tribute for sportsmanship woun have been his. Ritola would have had to think fast to accomplish such a situation, as Nurmi trotted a lap after he was stricken. With only three laps to go, Willie undoubtedly thought it necessary to protect himself against the possibility that the Olymplc champlon would re- cover in time to finish the race. Moreover, it Is very likely that Ritola paid little or no attention to the de- parture of Nurmi. factory number Celluloid 20x50 Inch p—— Radiators for Fords $10.95 Of strong honeycomb construction. _ Guaranteed not to leak and ueninst all defects in workman- ship. YORK, March 20.—Paavo Nurmi has some distance to travel before he can bring about a total eclipse of Willie Ritola, his outstand- ing rival for middle distance honors. A survey of the long lists of rec- ords established by the two phe- nomenal Finns since their assault upon Amerlcan indoor track marks started reveals that Ritola harbors two world records which Paavo has been unable to capture.
