FIN STOCKS GO HIGHER DURING AFTERNOON Day Sees Moderate Gains in Many Issues—Heavy Buy- ing in Oil Shares. BY STUART P. WEST. Bpertal Dispateh to The Star. NEW YORK, March 20.—The stock merket was strong the greater part of tha time today, although there wes no excited bidding up of prices. Much of the buying apparently was for short account, induced by a moderats amount of fresh accumu- Jation. People who had taken profits during December and January were thought to be picking up stocks again. However, they were in no hurry to get them. Offerings were well absorbed, but buyers were un- willlng to follow up prices. Industrials Are Active. With the general market in a safer position, people Interested fn the in- dustrial speclalties got busy again, marking prices up rather sharply. Nash Motors made a new high rec- ord as it crossed 290. The talk here {5 of = capital split-up. Woolworth, Air Reductfon and Remington Type- writer were other favorites. Amerl- can Water Works common, Fhowing that it is still closely held, sold round its top figures. Fividently there had heen some selling of Pittsburgh and West Vir- &inia_on reports of extreme competi- tion tn the coal trade, resulting in tha closing of a number of mines. Jiut these Sellers in this particular Instance had run up against a tight tioating supply and had to pay the alty. Pittsburgh and West Vir- minia stack jumped briskly when ef- forts were made to cover. Utllity Shares Gain. wublic utility shares were a feature ot ihe market. Columbia Gas was the ader, crossing 57 on large trans- jons. This brought mpathetic ‘huying into Brooklyn Union onsolidated Gas and Standard 'he high priced Laclede joined in h the rest Sugar stocks wers strong, With American Sugar across 63 again. Cu- ban-American, at 30, was up nearly % point. The best opinion is that on the recent decline the sugar stocks 2djusted themselves to the low sell- nz prices of raw sugar, taking ac- count also of the probabilitics of an- other big Cuban crop Therefore they are in a position of paving discounted unfavorable trade news and of facing the possibility of improvement in conditions as the seeson goes on. Much Short Covering. There was active short covering in | stocks where operations for the de- cline had been particularly vigorous. In this category were the St. Pauls, American Woolen, Bethlehem Stee Atlantic Gulf and Pan-American “B. The copper shares did better, Kenne- rott above 49 representing a rally of rore than 2 points. St Joseph Lead was in demand again. Outside of repurchases for short sccount, there was no incident in the trading in the oils. They were merely following the general market, which meant that as a rule they were elightly higher. MAREET CLOSES STRONG. Rally in Wheat Spreads to Stocks in Last Hour. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, March 20.—Stock prices rallied sharply today with buying for both accounts influenced by the rapid comeback in wheat prices and the re- asturing statements on business condi- tions by Secretaries Hoover and Mellon. Trading, however, was in reduced vol- ume, the day’s sales aggregating about 1,200,000 shares. The closing was strong. A sharp rally in wheat prices brought about mure urgent short covering in stocks in the late trading, final prices showing gains of 1 to 10 points on the day. IN BOND MARKET Abundance of Funds in Money Market Acts as Real Stimulant. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 20.—Despite plain indications of easier money there was no increase of {nterest either in United States Government bonds or In the high-grade railroad issues. Prices were steady, but that was about all. Elsewhere in the mar- ket speculative securities responded to the better tone in stocks. A strik- ing instance was that of the St. Paul loans, all of which increased in price. St. Paul Issues Advance. Whether this was brought about by short covering or was the expres- sion of a conviction that the decline had gone farther than the facts war- ranted was not apparent. The largest gain was made in St. Paul refunding 4%s5. The secured 6s and the gen- eral mortgage 45 were both substan- tially higher, while there was a sharp rally in the Puget Sound 4s and the Chicago, Terre Haute anu Southeast- ern refunding 5s and incomes went up with the other St. Paul issues 1. G. N. adjustments, selling at 71, were up a point and a quarter from Thursday's close. Erie General 4s im- proved a half point and Chicago and Eastern Illinofs 5s were up frac- tionally, as were Seaboard Air Line adjustments. Of the olls Pan American Petroleum 6s were the leaders, up at one time over two points. Obligations of the sugar producing companies were all steady and American Sugar 6s ad- vaneed. Forelgn List Quiet. In the foreign list, some reaction developed in the Jugoslav 8s, which brought them down below 88. There was no improvement in the French list, but the German 7s were very firm. Peru 8s sold at 93, which com- pared with a high for the vear of over 102, Today's new offerings were com- paratively small, the principal one being two State of Idaho issues. One was $1,000.000 Idaho Treasury notes due March 1, 1926, to yield 3.50 per cent and the other was $663.500 re- funding 4% per cent State of Idaho bonds maturing serially to vield from 3.75 to 4.05 per cent HEAVY NOTE ISSUES FALL DUE IN APRIL Far Greater Financing Pending Now Than at Same Time in 19248, ° By the Associated Press W YORK, March 20—FBonds and notes of railroads, public utility and industrial companies falling due in April aggregate $105,131,480, accord- ing to a Wall street compilation, which compares with $42,434,280 this month and $41,683,500 in April 1924, In addition to these corporats securi- ties, forelgn issues totaling $4,600,000 also fall due next month.
