INBOND MARKET Unsettled Stock Prices Cause Caution—St. Paul Issues Again Lower. BY GEORGE T. HUGH! Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 17.—Except only in United States Government se- curities and In the high-grade sav- ings bank rails tower prices were the rule In today's bond market. For this the only adequate explana- tion was the weakness In stocks, which influenced the purely specu- lative bonds, and some of the second- grade issues as well. Examples of the latter were Baltimore and Ohio convertible 41:s, which broke 92, and the St. Louis-San Francisco prior lien A 4s, which sold below These losses were recovered in part later. Rail Issues Freely Sold. Speculative railroad bonds were heavily sold, notably Missouri-Kan- as-Texas adjustments and St. Louls- an Francisco incomes. The “Katy" adjustments went down with the pre- ferred stock into which they are to be convertible. Large losses were sustained in the convertible ofl is- sues, such as Skelly Ol 63s. There was some selling of the convertible coppers. St. Paul bonds wers agaln a weak spot with the 4s of 1925 making an- other new low record. Declines were also registered in the other junior issues secured under the same mortgage. The first mortgage bonds and the & per cent notes were steady. It Is gen- erally agreed that no matter what the outcome of the St. Paul situation, the first mortgege bonds will be un- disturbed. Foreign Group Stea In the ‘“over-the-counter” trading | the feature was the weakness in the Detrolt United 6 per cent notes, which at one time were quoted 841 bid, 85 asked, against a bid price of 90 the day after the recelvership was an- nounced. Forelgn bonds were relatively unaf- fected by the selling elsewhere. The syndicate which brought out the Greek 7s last December at 88 was dissolved today, but the bonds were fairly firm around thelr recent price of 85. GERMAN BONDS AND STOCKS. By the Associated Pr CHICAGO, March 17.—Within & twinkling, ‘wheat prices broke 11 cents today under a tumultuous rush of selling that overwhelmed the mar- ket. Efforts on a big scale to escape losses on the part of the owners was the chief and.immediate factor. A sensational overturning of quotations at Liverpool did much also to pull values here down. Chicago opening pri which ranged from 43 cents to 11 cents lower, with May 1.54 to 1.60 and July 140 to 1.44, were fol- lowed by temporary upturns of about 2 cents from the bottom level, Corn and oats plunged downward with wheat. After opening at 1% to 5% off, May 1.15% to 1.17, corn drop- ped to 1.14 for M Oats started % to 47 lower, 44 to 443, and went to 41, Provisions averaged lower, sympa- thizing with grain. At the heaviest of the earlier slashes In price today wheat showed a drop of more than 35 cents a bushel under the high point last week and a 52-cent drop compared with $2.05, the top record on January 28. May corn was down about 16 cents from last week’s top. Fresh waves of selling later swept the wheat market to 3 cents below the opening figure and whirled May down to $1.51 This was a total break of 14 cents a bushel since ves- terday’s finish. The bulk of the new selling still remained, apparently, of a liquidating character, much of the business consisting of forced offer- ings due to standing orders to close out deals and to stop losses at defi- nite limits TEAT— May Cloze. 158 138 130 | 118 119 1188 High 1.61 | duiy Beptember eptember OATS— May .. NEW YORK, March 17.—Liquida- {tion was renewed in the cotton mar | ket in today's- ear trading. The| opening was steady at an advance of | points to a decline of 5 poin | near months being higher on rela- tively firm Liverpool cables. They {soon weakened, however, -and the | general list sold off to net losses of 1 to 16 points. May declining to 5.19 and October to 24.94, new low {ground for the movement. There was Southern as well as Jo- cal and Wall Street selling promoted | {by reports of showers in East Texas and the unsettled tone of the stock market. Stop orders were uncovered on the break and after their execu- tion the market rallied a few points, but was nervous and unsettled at the end of the first hour. New Orleans Quotations. NEW ORLEANS, March 17.—The cotton market opened irregularly higher in sympathy with firmer Liv- | erpool cables than due. First trades showed gains of 8 to 13 points on i{near months, but later positions gained only 3 to 4 points. As the {weather map showed some rains in| st Texas and heavy, rains in the {central and eastern befts and as the | forecast was for more unsettled and |showery weather in the West, prices |soon eased off under pressure of rather heavy selling. { CLOTHING PLANTS RESUME. NEW YORK. March 17 (Special).— New York's dress manufacturing in- Qustry, tied up for a week by strike of 0,000 operatives, resumed work on Easter garments today under a com- |promise agreement. Differences as to when a new wage scale, agreed upon last month, should g0 into effeet caused the suspension. NEW CABBAGE ARRIVES. NEW YORK, March 17 (Special).— The New York market today received its first carload of bulk Copenhagen cabbage from Texas. The shipment | met a very limited outlet at $40 to 1§45 per ton, which was barely more than the cost of transportation and refrigeration. Old crop cabbage was {dull at $12 to $15. { BUTTER HIGHER TODAY. CHICAGO, March 17.—Butter— Higher; creamery, extras, 48%a48% standards, 483 ; extra firsts, 462471 firsts, 40%ad41:; seconds, 34a36.
