NEW YORKg March 13.—The up- bldding of a number of high-priced stocks and the strength in certain ders among both industrials and \ls today had the effect of gIving parts of the list a firm appearance. The buying, however, was by ne means general. There was persistent selling In stocks which have been under pressure from time to time in the last few months, and the net re- sult was an irregular price move- ment, with as 1 s as galns. Ttllity Shares Feature. Punlic utility shares were again a feature on the buying side. There was another remarkable upturn in American Water Works to new high levels, showing that since the capital plit-up there could not have been much distribution. The stock acted as one that was still closely held Columbla Gas at one time was up over 2 points from where It was selling Thursday morning. Pauls were heavily sold again for a time, but short covering held the decline in check after the preferred had gone down over & point and the common nearly a point. There was better recognition of the fact that Chicago Northwestern Is earning only little more than 5 per cent, while paying only 4. This for a stock which lately has been selling in the 70s, has looked to many as & prety high figure. The shares went through 67 today. Amerfcan Can Strong. American Can above 180 again. Allis Chalmers at another new high and special buying of St. Joseph Lead, Texas Gulf Sulphur and Otls Elevator at rising prices were features. The Cuba Cane Sugar stocks appeared to be attracting some new support. This company can make money even at the present very low prices, and it Is gen- erally agreed that the price of Cuban raws has been stabilized around the existing level. CLOSE IS IRREGULAR. - + American Woolen at Lowest Price in Eight Years. By the Associated Press. W YORK, March 13.—Another violent decline in -wheat prices oaused heavy selling of stocks in to- day's market, giving the general list a reactionary tone throughout most of the jion. Bullish operations were successfully conducted, how- aver, in a few rails and public utili- tles, American Woolen sold at fts lowest price In eight years. Total sales approximated 1,300,000 shares The closing was Irregular. Standard industrials were in rather large sup- ply during the late trading, but fur- ther accumulation of Teaxs and Pa- cific sent that stock to a record high, above 58, and Nash Motors soared 1214 points. at a Glance NEW YORK — Stocks frregular; public utilitles strong.
