Buffalo slaught:r Faked F one were to take spectacle of scores of buffalo dotting the plains as present- ed in Paramount's picturization of Zane Grey's “The Thundering Herd,” there would probably be a loud and universal demand for criminal prose- cution of the Yellowstone National Park authorities who permitted the outrage, as well as the director and actors who took part in such a wan- ton and disgraceful business. For- tunately, however, the buffalo popu- lation of the United States In 1925 remains approximately the same, de- spite the apparent terrific mortality cxecuted on the animals in this plcture. When Zane Grey wrote “The Thun- dering Herd” he wrote a romance around the practice prevalent 50 years ago of wholesale and indiscrim- inate killing of buffalo solely for hides. The story was immediately recognized as a tremendously power- ful screen drama, but no one ever ex- pected to see it filmed, simply be- cause the remaining herds of buffalo in Yellowstone Park are rigidly pro- tected by law, and any buffalo killing would immediately lodge the offender in jail. Quite suddenly, though, the director of the park reached the conclusion that his buffalo herd was getting a unwieldy, and permission was asked of the authorities at Wash- d R.
