CHICAGO, March 3. — Testimony that W. E. D. Stokes, New York millionaire, told his mother-in-law that he “knew all about Helen Ell- wood Stokes before marrying her was given today by the mother-in- law, Mrs. Emma Ellwood Miller of Denver.' HINES DENIES REPORTS OF RETIRING FROM ARMY, Chief of Staff Says Health Is Good and Expects to Stay in Service Until 1932. Maj. Gen. John L. Hines, chief of staff of the Army, yesterday authorized a denlal of the published report that he contemplated an early -retirement from active service on account of {1l health or for any other reason. As a matter of fact his health is better now than it was several years ago and he sees no reason why he should not continue his military duties until hl;zslntutory retirement for age in 1932, He was deputy chief of staff under Gen. Since the appeal has been pending Williams was tried and convicted on another charge of selling dops and is under sentence for an additional five vears' imprisonment.
