On an old historic mossy wall of Georgetown grows a shy wildling that, with its masses of dark green, cheers this gray month of February— the cliff brake, rarest fern of this region. It is a beautifyl little fern, with shapely dark leavé and black- ish purple stems, and It has a habit of securing a foothold for itself in places where it would seem there was not an inch of soil and the very rain would wash it from its perch. Yet here it grows, a living wall of green, taxing the imagination to sec how it keeps its foothold. Its liking for cliffs and ancient meta- morphic rocks is satisfied here on the old retalning wall. No one knows how long this fern has grown there. The wall itself goes back to early days of the last century. Some time since then the cliff brake has found its way here. There is little likelihood that it was planted. Probably mno full-grown fern plant would have been able to survive transplanting to such a pre- carious position. Only a spore (or what- in olden days witches called “fern seed”) could find lodging in these crannies and so start a young plant. The spread of the fern along the quarter of a mile of all must be very slow. There are a hundred chances for faflure to one of suc- cess when a spore falls from the par- ent plant and is blown, to alight where it may. But fortune has so favored wall and fern that now there are several thousands of the cliff brake there, The only other places in or near the District where the cliff brake grows are some rocks “up river,” a wall in Alexandria, and a spot ‘along the old canal. It is curious to see to what tricks the cliff brake resorts to protect itself in Winter. In these cold days it has, 8o to speak, curled in its @oes—each leaf segment is slightly | tolled in, after the fashion of the resurrection and lip ferns, as if to protect the delicate under surfaces of the leaves from dangerous expo- sure. Let the warm spring days come, and a few sunny showers, and the fronds will expand in full charm. The quaint old wall, with its green treasure, is worth watching for. Let no implous hand, however, disturb the ferns. They are quite as much the property of the owners of the wall and quite as much their pride as are the rosebushes inside the in- closure. Moreover, the ferns are too small to look effective if picked and too delicate to survive if dug out and transplanted. With Mutton. Soak a tahlespoonful of haricot | beans overnight. Cut the mutton into small pleces, and fry them just| brown in a little dripping. Peel and cut up a carrot, turnip and onion, and fry them for five minutes in the fat the meat was fried n.
