14 THE: EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. €., FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 1925. POLAR AIRTRIPS British Expedition’s Entry Into Field Adds to Race Interest. Correspondence of %he Star and World February 1.—The possi- -fold aerial fleet to the th Pole this summer is raised by announcement that Grettir Al- garsson, a British Columbian, pro- poses to set out in May from Liver- with an_expedition, the last stages of which will be by airplane to_the North Pole. ald Amundsen had already an- nounced his intention of undertaking an aerial flight from Spitzbergen this summer (early in May, if possible) and there s a projected Japanese ex- pedition under Hammer, who was ndsen’s lieutenant on previous Polar journe There is also talk of American xpeditions. The British Algarsson, proposes to t ship from the Mer- sey to Reykjavik, Iceland, thence to Spitzbergen, where after coaling the vessel will skirt the west coast as as the ice permits, which if the mer is a good one, should be ewhere in the nelghborhood of 81 s north. A base will then be wed, an airplane assembled, and | stage, the polar fiight, will | dertake Shore parties from the base will| take observati nd make natu history and ogical collections which on the return of the expedition will be at the dispc of Liverpool museums and various scientific in- stitutions Commander F. commanded Shackleton's durance and Quest, will ¢ ship and act as second ir the expedition The venture will demand an air- vlane of special des which it is proposed shall embody developments arising out of the recent light air- plane tests at Lympne, but more yowerfully engined than any used in these experiments. The plane will be fitted with skii for landing on ice, and will be provided with floats for enforced landings on water. Recep- wireless will be carrled, and if overcome, apparatus capable of send- ng messages a limited distance. It is intended, if possible, to land at the o for the purpose of taking ob- servations. The expedition will return the east Greenland coast, the coastal ice barrier, and proceed home via New York. When in the ice area it is proposed to make important tests with petrol tractors, so that nder Worsley may see what tion in their design may be ry for the transarctic journey he proposes to make next year across the Polar basin. e final dash to the Pole by air, novel and most hazardous stage of the venture, will be undertaken by Algarsson with one companion, and it will be to the perfecting of the ar- rangements for this that the expe- rience and ingenuity of the explorers will be mainly employed between now and the time for departure. Al- garsson, who has had a long asso- iation with Liverpool, having served his apprenticeship with the Blue Funnel Line of steamers, is raising funds in that city, and the bulk of the consumable stores have already been promised. OLD MESSAGE FOUND. Bottle Washed Ashore on Labrador Coast After 11 Years. pondence of the Associated Press. FALMOUTH, Englnad F uary 2.— Eleven ye: ago Capt. J. R. Moore, the landlord of a local hotel here, was in charge of the motor ketch Fort Churchill when the vessel was caught in a blizzard at Port Perrique Bay, on tbhe Labrador coast. Thinking that his ship was doomed and that the crew would perish, the captain inclosed farewell messages in a bottle and threw them overboard. After he had done this it was found possible to beach the vessel and all lives were saved. Capt. Moore has now received word from the Hudson Bay Company to the effect that the bottle with the UB U0 dn paysTM useq STy seSTssowr The Husband—TI hope you didn’t. island at Labrador. | New York | | INDON. v of a five mand the and of along delimiting OFFICER REASSIGNED.
