14 *v RAILROAD SHARES Merger Talk Brings About Lively Advance—Gains by Equipments. Dy the Associated Peess NEW YORK, February 21.—Stock prices worked into higher ground to- day under the leadership of the cquipments and Sbuthwestern Railroad share timulated by reports of new nicrger alignments, many of the latter rose to the highest levels in several years. Placing of large orders for rail sup- plies promoted a wider demand f cquipments, which was cnutated by belated short covering. The buving in such stocks as Rock Island, Kansas City uthern, Missouri - Kansas - Texas, Wabash and St. Louis Southwestern, carrying them in some instances to new high prices, was in greater volume than Wall Street has seen in weeks. It was a repetition of the great speculation which set in when the idea of railway mergers and favorabla dividend action was first conceived in speculative quarters. St. Panl an Exception. The notalle exception to the trend of prices in the rallway section was the St. Paul securities. They were ctively sold, the preferred and com- mon stocks sinking to mew lows for the year and the 4 per cent bonds of 1 so dropping to bottom figures. This was obviously a reflection of the doubt which has spread regarding St. Paul's ability to meet its refund- ing requirements this year. In the last half hour the keen edge appeared to be off the speculation i the lower-pricgd s and in varlous individual stocks. Realizing sales had their effect, which was only natural in view of the sharp upbid- ding of prices which had occurred on Friday and again today. Nimble traders were switching from the rails to other active favorites or were evening up over the double holiday. American Loco fiains. American Locomotive, advancing to much the highest prices it has sold, took the lead away from Baldwin Locomotive. The latter reflected rather heavy profit-taking. American Steel Foundry rose to a new top. American Can went ahead sharply, and in the specialty group some of the features w ge Arms, Beechnut Packing, Park and Tilford and Allied Chemical WEST. ra Markets at a Glance NEW YORK—Stocks—Firm; South- western rails up on merger Teportsg Bonds—Steady; oil lens resume ad- vance Foreign exchanges—Ea and frar react. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispateh to The Star. NEW YORR, February 21.—High- vielding issues were again confidently bought, with St. Louis-San Francisco obligations among the leaders. Ad- vances were scored by both the ad- justment and the income bonds of the last-named road, the theory being that Interest charges on these two issues now contingent would become’ fixed If the road were made a part of another system, as is currently reported to be the plan. The St. Louis-San Francisco grior lien serles were also strong on the assumption that their investment status would be improved by any merger. Other recent favorites such as New Haven 6s, I. G. N. adjustments, Chicago and Eastern Illinoly 6s and the Seaboard bonds generally were in_demand. High-grade rails held around the best prices of the year. Short term securities were in favor, such as Colorado Southern 4s. The significant fact is that notwithstanding all the talk about higher money bonds are at the highest for the past six years and show no signs of weakening. This calculation is based on a com- bination of high-grade and semi- speculative socurities, ' There was too muxh doubt about political conditions abroad, especlally in the case of France, to permit this part of the list to participate in the strength elsewhere, At the same time it must be admitted there was no real weakness even in the French group. For the present the important sup- port which has been in evidence most of the weelk appears effective. MOTOR WHEEL IMPROVES. Charles Williams, colored, is held in Philadelphia by police in con- noetion with a murder at Warwick, on the Mount Vernon car line five miles south of Alexandria, October 20, 1919, Willlams was arrested, accord- ing to information received from Phil- adelphia detectives, on information furnished by a colored man. In the records of Fairfax County, Paul Morton, director of public safety, found that 1da Carter, colored, had been mur- dered about 3 am, October 20, 1919. A picture of Willlams was identified as that of a man who had been in the county about that time, Morton said. There were no’eyewitnesses to the Killing. Do. sp Lake Sh Mine FINANC WEEK SEESWHEAT | AND CORNHIHER Decrease in Visible Supply and Reports of Worthless Seed Are Special Factors. By the Associated Prese. CHICAGO, February 21.—Despite many rapid shifts, the general tend- ency of the wheat market has been upward this week, helped by asser- tions that supplies of wheat in the United States would be only suf- olent for domestic needs during April, May and.June next. Compared with a week ago, wheat this morning was 1% 'to 3% higher, corn 1% to 2% up, oats unchanged to 11 lower and pro- vislons varying from 10al2 to 50 gain. Recelpis Falling Off. It was pointed out that generally the demand from abroad for wheat becomes most urgent in the three months named, and that a decided falling_off in the volume of receipts at domestic primary markets is at present well under way. In_this connection, howover, faflure of United States visible supplies to decrease as rapidly as had been looked for was rather disconcerting to would-be promoters of higher prices. On the other hand, many countries were mentioned as having yet un- filled big requirements of bread- stuffs, with India’s new crop out- look precarious and the 1925 Russian harvest threatened to be a failure. Toward the end of the week favor- able reports as to the outlook for the new Winter wheat crop in the United States attracted considerable atten- tion. With the crop described as al- ready greening um in the southern portions of the wheat belt, July and September deliveries went to a wider discount in price as compared with May. Good Gain in Corn. Corn owed much of its gain this week to reports that 50 per cent of sead corn is worthless. Besides, 2 big decrease of the movement of corn to primary centers was noted. Immense stocks of oats available tended to pull down the oats markets. Hog values at the season’s top rec- ord made provisions average higher, although lard is piling up here fast. CHICAGO GRAIN PRICES. CHICAGO, February 21.—Selling on the part of holders both of wheat and corn pulled down prices today during the early dealings. Some of the sell- ing of wheat resulted from standing orders to stop losses at certain limits. Buying support for the market was lacking except from previous sellers who were in a position to collect a profit. The opening, which varled from unchanged figures to 1% lower, May 1.84 to 1.84% and July 1.53% to 1.53%, was followed by material de- clines all around and then by rallies, which, however, failed to last well. Corn weakness was accentuated by the fact that cash demand was slow. After opening at !5 to 1 cent off, May 1.28 to 1 %, the market underwent an additional sag and then recovered somewhat. Oats went down grade with wheat and corn, starting at % to 1 lower, May 52% to 52%, and showing but little power to react. Higher quotations on hogs gave a lift to provisions.
