HEFFERNAN, NEW YORK, February 20.—The movement of prices on the curb ex- change today was precisely the same as that of Thufsday, namely, that in- dividual stocks were selected for leadership and in several instances were bid up sharply. Foremost among these was Engi- neers Gold, which was pushed forward in spectacular fashion and establshed a new high record well above any previous quotations. It had closed at 35% and was bid up to 42 today be- fore the upward movement subsided. There appeared to be no new incen- tive concerning this property for such sharp advances as have oc- curred during the past week. The stock was responding to the highly avorable reports concerning develop- ments at the property Glen Alden, which was such a fea- ture on the preceding day, maintained Its place of leadership. At 135 it compared with the previous close of NEW YORK, February 20.—Follow- ing is an official list of bonds and stocks traded in on the New York Curb market today: Sates in BONDS. High. Selling appeared to be the result of liquidation by tired holders in view of the failure of directors to do anything regarding dividends. Hazeitine Corporation continued strong, in anticipation of a highly fa- vorable annual report, due next week. The oils as a group attracted lttle attention, but speclal buying in the low-priced Columbian Syndicate - car- ried the price up almost a point on a heavy turnover. Unity Gold SMOKELESS POWDER MAY BE STORED UNDER WATER Correspondence of the Associated Press. SAN FRANCISCO, January 28.— Experiments conducted by the Army have demonstrated that smokeless powder may be stored under water in cold mountaln lakes without deterioration, it was announced here recently at' headquarters of the 9th Corps Area. This, It was said, probably will pro- | vide a method of storing large quan- tities of powder without danger of fire or explosion. The constant low temperature maintained under the water retards the decomposition of the powder which normally would take place if It were stored in maga- zines and thus is expected actually to increase its life by probably 10 years. “Powder which has been in storage for several years under water,” sald the statement, “can be given a sim- ple drying treatment and fired in the gun for which it was originally de- signed without appreciable variation in velocity and pressure. These con- ditions are maintained with little dif- ference whether the powder is stored in sea water or fresh water. “Three types of powder have been used in the underwater storage ex- periment. Powder for 75-mm, 165- mm and 12-inch guns was placed in specially prepared boxes + provided with numerous openings to allow free circulation of water, and im- mersed in the lake to a depth of about 3 feet. For purposes of conparison an equal amount of each kind of powder was stored in a mag- asine. At the end of six onths samples taken from the laketwere found to have undergone no appreci- able change, either in stabllity or ballistic qualitie: DIVIDEND ON YEAST 15 RAISED 10 §4 Fleischmann Directors Carry Out Wishes of Company’s Late President. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, February 20.—Direc- tors of the Fleischmann Company, carrying out plans of Jullus Flelsch- mann, president of the /concern until his death on February 5, today in- creased the annual dividend rate on the common stock from $3 to $4 a share, through declaration of a $1 quarterly payment. The previous quarterly distribution had been made at the rate of 75 cents a share, al- though frequent extras were declared. Earnings of the company In 1924 In- creased more than $1,000,000 to $9,- 843,233, and were equivalent to $6.51 a share on the common stock. C. F. Holmes, treasurer of the com- pany, announced that not one share of Fleischmann common stock had been released by any of tho officers for heirs of Julius Fieischmann since his death, and that his estate had re- mained intact. GREAT AFRICAN DESERT ' NO LONGER A MYSTERY Automobile Trips and Flight by Daring Airmen Reveal Much Hitherto Unknown. Correspondence of The Star and the Chicage Daily News. ALGIERS, January 15. bile trips from Algiers to the River Niger and Lake Tchad and the flights of daring airmen are serving to make the African desert less a mystery than it has been. Possibly only a few years will pass before the Sahara becomes a popular resort to which travelers anxious to escape the nolse and hustle of modern cities will re- tire for rest jn the quiet oases. How- ever that may be, the fact is that there are more outside visitors to the desert now than ordinarily in the past. Prominent among them are scientists who live among the Saha- ran tribes, studying their language and customs in an endeavor to learn from whom they are descended and what their ancestors were like. Meanwhile modern caravans, that is to say, caravans of motor cars, are making the desert more and more known. Recently a “mission,” which left Colomb-Bechar with “cater- pillar” cars, reached Lake Tchad The firm that sent the mission is organizing a regular weekly service from Paris to Timbuktu. The jour- ney from Colomb-Bechar will requirc about seven days. A mission that included Marshal Franchet d'Esperey and left Colomb-Bechar with several six-wheeled auto cars arrived at Bourem, on the Niger, elght days later and went on its way down to Kotonu, in Dahomey. And, by the way, all the Sahara has just been traveled over for the first time by a iady, Mme. Delinguette, who accom- panied her husband. a captain in the French army, wha joined his military post at Zinder. The French air min- istry is planning a regular aerial service to connect the Mediterranean Sea wlith the Niger. Thus the Sahara, no longer protected by its vas and expanse, is to become the “trait d'union” between North Africa and the black country. Automo- ‘WOOL DEMAND UNEVEN. BOSTON, February 20.—The Com- mercial Bulletin tomorrow will say: “The demand for wool is still ir- regular and for the most part limited, although the manufacturers are look- ing the market over carefully in or- der to keep posted, If nothing more. Some business is being done, never- theless, and usually at slightly lower prices. more especially on the finer qualities, French combing fine and fine medium wools in the original bags being quotable at about $1.45, clean basis.” Your Banker Knows. You trust him with your deposits—why not trust him with your investment problems? Norwegians Plan Air Line. Correspoudence of the Associated Press. OSLO, January 19.—A Norwegian company intends to initiate a regular air service between here and Malmo, Sweden, April 15. It has ordered a number of German airplanes. JUMPS COAL OUTPUT. Consolidation Company Shows Much More Activity. Special Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, February "o-burlng the first six weeks of 1925 the Con- solidation Coal Company mined and shipped more than 1,000,000 tons of coal, which is about 10 per cent more than the total for the corresponding period of 1924. It is also better than the showing for either 1923 or 1952. With a view to economies in opera- tion, the company is concentrating operations at certain mines, where feasible, while less profitable mines in the“sante district are being shut down. Recently the company closed the Gipsy, Riverdale mines in West Virginia. NET INCOME DECLINES. NEW YORK, February 20.—Net in- come of the Buckeye Pipe Line Co. declined in 1924 to $938,000, equiva- lent to $4.69 a share on the $10,000,000 capital stock, compared with $1,041,- 570, or $5.20 & share in 1923. In con- trast, however, to a deficit of $308,430 reported in 1923, there was surplus of $138,000 for 1924.
