Mr. and Mrs. Hammond Hests at Perjod Ball for Miss Hammond. Mr, and Mrs. John Hays Hammond prefaced the coming deluge of cos- tume balls to end this week and start the next, by turning the large ball- room at Rauscher's into a minfature “Gallerle des Glaces,” at Versallles, in which court beaux and beauties of the period of Louis XV and XVI fig- ured in graceful dances and gorgeous array. It was a Marine Antoinette ball, with Hiss Natalle Hammond, their daughter, for whom the ball was given, appearing as Marie Antoinette, her cos tume of that period being & wonder- fuly artistic dress of apricot-color taffeta over a full petticoat of blue chiffon, panels being cut away to show the blue and finished at the top with greceful garlands of flowers. The full skirt was much shorter than those worn at that court, but was re- deemed by a court train of cloth of silver embroidered in flowers. The white coiffure of that period, with its garland of gay flowers, was exceed- ingly becoming to the young hoste: Mrs. Hammond wore a stately cos- tume of the same period, the petticoat of pale pink satin incrusted in crys- tals, with the puffed sleeves and long vest of the same design and color. Over this was the gokn, with full court train of ruby-color velvet, the panels and train showing a lining of silver. In keeping with the rest of the costume were her splendid jewels. Miss Harmimond, the sister of the host, who assisted, wore a period costume of blue and pink. Mrs. Hammond, her daugster and Miss Hammond stood in the small ballroom to receive their several hun- dred guests, and the large ballroom was a fit setting for the period dances. The celling was testooned with smilax, with huge clusters of flowers pendant, and garlands of smilax and flowers formed a deep frieze about the wall. The ballroom walls of old ivory show- ing between the mirrors reflected the Attractive Hangings CORNELL WALL PAPER CO. 714 13th St. N.W. Older members of society selected from among the friends of Mr. and Mrs. Hammond were seated with them {n a large box at the far end of the ballroom. Miss Hammond opened the ball with a gavotte, dancing with Comdr. Elmer Langworthy. “Glgues” and “rigadons,” danced by some of Miss Hawke's pupils, con- tributed a merry element and were interspersed among the more stately measures of tho.dance. Pavannes and minuet were danced by a ple- turesque group of men and maids, among them Miss Helen Carusi, a particular chum,_of Miss Hammon: Miss Madeline Couzens, Miss Eliza- beth Zolnay, Miss Margaret Zolnay, Miss Bessie McKeldin, Miss Lutfia Yousry, daughter of the Minister of Egypt, and Miss Betty Byrne. They danced with cavaliers transformed from dashing modern youths into beaux of the period. The cavaliers in the minuet were Mr. Rixey Smith, Mr. Herbert New- man, Mr. Louis Alfaro and Mr. George T. Summerlin. This was followed by a minuet by Miss Margaret Zolnay and Victor Alfaro. Serenades on old French suitars introduced the Shepherd of the Petit Trianon, with Miss Bessie McKeldin, Alfred Thom, Miss Ruth 8toddard, Daniel Wright, Miss Annie Boyd, Howland Chase, 3d; Miss Betty Byrne and Randolph Carroll. There was an old French gigus by two of Miss Hawke's puplls, and a group of French songs by a delightful artist. Among the guests were the Am- bassador of France and Mme. Daesch- ner, the Mlles.
