Estabrook, Named Director by International Institute of Agriculture, Tke International Institute of Agri- culture at Rome yesterday appointed Leon M. Estabrook of the United States Department of Agriculture as director of the world census of &gri- culture to be made by the institute in 1930. The census will be the first offort ever made to Inventory the world's agriculture, and is expected to yleld valuable statistical data that will enable the leading agricultural countries to organize their produc- tion of food and fibers to meet the world demand. Mr. Estabrook was formerly chair- man of the Crop Reporting of ,the Department of Agriculture, having organized that service in 1913. In 1923 he was loaned to the Argentine Republic for the purpose of developing a crop reporting sys- tem and statistical methods. He taught his- tory, mathematics, physics and rhetorfc in the North Texas Uni- versity. Mr. Estabrook came to Washington in 1893, and for 10 years was a stenographer and _ correspondence clerk in the War Department. He entered the Department of Agricul- ture in 1904, and In a few months became secretary to the chief of the Bureau of Plant Industry. Later he was made chief of the congressional seed distribution. He then became chiet clerk of the Department of griculture, and in the fall of 1913 was appointed statisticlan and chief of the Bureau of Statistics, which he reorganized as the Bureau of Crop Estimates. The directorship of the world census of agriculture is regarded as a great honor and recognition of the effective work done for agricultu by Mr. Estabrook. Several hundred crop statisticlans and agricultural ex- perts from all over the world were candldates for the position, but the Institute finally went outside the list of candidates and tendered Mr. Esta- brook the directorship. ROME, February 18.—The cross- word puzzle crashed through into Italy Sunday for the firat time, care- tully labeled “dangerou: The Rome newspaper, Sereno, which published this first example “to save a bored public from collective sul- clde,” declares “therewith the public will find a cheerful road to the mad- house.” “To ald the aforesald public to gain tranquil idiocy,” continues the news- paper, “we begin offering the first puzzle from the pen of one who pre- fers to remain incognito fearing per- sonal vengeance.” The puzzle is in irregular form. Londen, yester- day, at Brompton Oratory, in the pre ence of a large gattering of diplomats. Mrs. Mitchell, who has been living in Europe for a number of years, gave her daughter away. The bride wore a gown of rose point lace in the Italian style over white charmeuse, with a slight train, a long tulle vell, a headdress of lace like a halo, and carried a sheaf of white Mlles.
