Many business men are shrewd in- vestors, having a knowledge of se- curities and of the market. They umulate a desirable list of hold- s, desirable at least for one in ive touch with affairs. But these same business men too many tim neglect to instruct their wives in th¢ most elementary principles of investment with the result that when, in the course of events, the wife is left to manage the estate she Is at a complete loss to know what to do and falls an easy victim to unscrupulous promoters. There are, of course, women fully as competent to take care of money as men, but they, unfortunately, are in the minority. There is no reason why this should be true. Every busi- ness man who has an¥ considerable amount of his savings, invested in uritles ought to see to it that his wife knows at least the principles of sound investment practice. The things she ought to know are simple and easily learned. In the first place shc ought to kmow the difference between capital and income. That goes without say- ing and yet there are both women and men who do not even recognize this distinction and who, it left to themselves, would live on their pri cipal. She ought to know that safety varies inversely with rate of veturn. This ean be put into simple language and illustrated so that any one can understand it. There are no exceptions to this rule whatever, any- body may say. She ought to know that there is risk inherent in new enterprises, risk that a widow de- péndent for her living upon income ought never to take. She ought to know that an im- posing list of directors does not necessarily make the securities of a corporation good investments. She ought to know that because Lawyer X or Dr. Z buys a security it does not follow that the same securities are suitable for her. doctors, make just as many mistakes in their investments as any one else. Finally, she ought to know that the business of giving investment advice is highly specialized and she ought to learn that the safest place 1o go when she is in doubt is to the bank with which she does business. Terhaps vour wife knows all these saings. If so, both you and she are fertunate.
