A car with four-wheel brakes running that speed can stop in less than 150 feet. What about the aver- age train? New Motoring Problem. Motordom has a new problem. With cars equipped with four-wheal brakes it is becoming increasingly difficult to determine how- fast such machines were traveling prior to an accident or collision. With two-wheel brakes that lock, the rear tires invariably make long tale marks on the pavement. With ape measure and a little mathe- matics the raute of speed is easily de- termined. But all this is impossible with cars that do not slide because their four brakes do not lock. How are they going to tell how fast a motorist was going prior to a col- lisfon? The emergency brakes still lock the rear wheels, but few motor- ists use these in an emergency, and {| wabble umlel‘-‘sh.flly 12 Grade Crossings In District Slated For Elimination Elimination of two grade crossings in the vicinity of Washington will be accomplished this year, according to John N. Thus it requires but a slight change in the position of either fender to throw a headlight out of adjustment If a front fender has been struck and straightened out again better test the headlights to make sure that every- thing is in order. When the héadlights are “on” 4 pedestrian loses conception of the speed of your car and gets out of the way in the belief that you are traveling fast. If there are rules against using the headlights in the city just a mere flash now and again will be con- strued as a mere accident on your part. The police would rather have you do this than rasp them with that everlastingly noisy horn. Always signal your Intentions of stopping or turning when approach- ing a city crossing even if traffic is light and you see no car in vour rear-view mirror. AUTOMATIC CAR STOP DEVICE IS DESCRIBED Magnet at Danger Points, Operated by Electricity, Will Halt Auto, Inventor Says. Special Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, January 31.—A device which would automatically stop &n aytomobile golng more than 15 miles an hoiir was described hers before safety officials. By means of an electrical Gevice attached to an Ignition switch the ignition circuit of a car would be broken if it ran past the magnet at more than 15 miles an hour, which would necessitate the motorist stop- ping and restoring the gircult. complicated to a point where there may be unother machine coming down a street to your rear that does not show in your mirror. Remember that in the city there is atways someone to measure the marks of your sliding tires on the pavement should you be Involved in an aceident. From this they can ascertain wheth- er or not you were keeping within the speed limit. ‘Worth Remembering. Make it a habit to look at the pavement in back of your car when you have stopped to park. Uncon- sclously many drivers stop far more suddenly than is necessary, thus leav- ing tire marks in the case of two- wheel brakes. So long as you have made that mistake. at least compen- sate for it by seelng whether your brakes are in equal adjustment. The tread marks will tell. ‘What's the Answer. 1.
